McLeish leaves Scotland for Blues

Mcleish seems to be going backwards. As far as jobs go, I'd have thought:

Rangers > Scotland > Birmingham

Just doesn't make a lot of sense to me, he could easily get relegated with Brum and then at least in the eyes of the English he would be nothing more than yet another Championship manager with a slightly higher profile than most.

OK so maybe he will get a few quid from Mr Gold, but if he thinks he can use this as a platform for landing a top EPL job I think he may end up severely disappointed.

Don't take anyone with Youth on their side as they will just up sticks and **** off at the first club calling. With this in mind, we're not left with much. Ideal picking would be Craig Levein though but he wouldn't take it. Years still in him at club level.

Like Walter? :p
I'm gutted McLeish has gone tbh, he was definitely progressing on the groundwork Walter laid down. The next manager must be able to continue this and be tactically astute, so that would remove Billy Davies and Graeme Souness out for me, personally.

I'm glad McLeish has moved on. I have never been convinced by him since his Rangers days. I think Scotland need to take their time choosing the next boss. I see no harm in waiting until the summer to appoint someone, and still leaving them a good couple of months to prepare for the next competitive matches. I don't think any Scottish manager that would consider the job is good enough. We need to forget about Berti and look abroad again.

What about Houiller?? Bring him in with Gary Mac in a similar way to Smith and McCoist? He has experience at the highest level and has expressed interest in international management. I dont think he would be inclined to disappear at the first hint of more money like some of the younger candidates and he could be good alonside Gary Mac since they worked together at Liverpool. Plus theres the added bonus of not getting drawn into compensation problems with managers at other clubs.

Just a thought..........

Not a bad shout but McAllister has ruled himself out. I'm completely biased when it come to Scotland but surely our excellent group of young players, our fanatical support and future prospects would be an attractive proposition for a top manager like Houllier. The only problem may be the amount of control the SFA are willing to hand over. I image the Frenchman would want to have the final say on a lot of matters.

also: welcome to the sports arena, nice name, Hearts fan?

Cheers mate, nah name refers to something completely different - dont ask! Am actually a dundee united fan so i'm just praying they dont come anywhere near Levein! Didnt actually realise McAllister had ruled himself out though. Houllier seems to keep an eye on football here still and attends a lot of coaching events etc. I believe he also goes to Scotland games aswell. Just heard Gordon Smith say that its unlikely they would go for a foreigner unless he was an outstanding candidate which i think Houllier would be!

Im also a united fan, but I rate my country way before club and if craig can take us to the finals, then its a worthy sacrifice. Its not as if anyone apart from 'those 2' are going to win the diddy spl anyway.

Good call semi-pro, have added myself to the 'what team do you support' to give the arabs a mention!

Slambo - Im the total opposite, although I'm Scottish and all proud to be I'd much rather success for Dundee United. If it was a choice between Levein staying with United and us playing in Europe and/or winning a cup or going to Scotland and qualifying then its United all the way I'm afraid.

I've just read that back to myself....I guess I'm not as patriotic as I should be!

I pity Birmingham supporters. Eck will galvanise the squad in the early part of his reign, but he'll buy badly and it'll all fall apart before long.

Eck left at the perfect time when his stock was at the highest. Imagine he had a nightmare opening to the World cup qualifiers he would be hard pushed to get a job in the championship.

Martin Jol is someone I wouldnt mind having a go at the job either coz Spurs are just as poor since he left so it clearly want just him. Problem is the SFA are so tight they will go for cheapest option they can as per.

I personally would have liked to have seen Strachan actually, I KNOW the chances of this are a good bookies bet, but he has good Managers experience, been in management long enough to do the job, plus the major fact! One of a very few who could job and knows the passion up here for a good team of youngish players and talent.

That said and being realistic.... Levein to me, is too short on experience, but one for the future. Souness is a frightning proposal, but funnier things have happened. When you look at the choices currently a foreigner such as Houlier may be welcome....
