After my previous thread and zero success over several weeks with the "humane" mouse-traps (which I spent loads on :(), I decided to go all alpha on the mouse that decided to take up residence in my humble abode...

I bought one of these: http://www.pest-stop.co.uk/electronic-pest-control/36/electronic-rat-killer/

I decided to go for the Rat Killer as I guessed I may as well have something too powerful than not enough.

Bloody hell these contraptions are vicious! I got woken up at 4am by a snap, crackle and pop noise... wandered out of bed and saw blue sparks flying about. Poor thing didn't have a chance and I'm sure it must have been cooked to well-done judging by the smell. Well, I did give it a choice of being caught humanely but never mind :D

If anyone else has issues with mice, I'd definitely recommend this, I didn't even bait it and it's a nice, efficient, clean and I guess pretty humane way of dealing with it.

Sorry, I couldn't be bothered to take pics at that ungodly hour!

There was one in my house a few months back that woke me up like clockwork everyday at 4am with it's gnawing or scratching or whatever the hell it was doing...

Thank God my dog finally caught it or I would have gone mad.

Borrowing someone's cat or dog was the next logical step if this didn't work :) But yeah, it's quite stressful and my sleep pattern is screwed enough as it is.

I'm sure the humane traps are just a money-spinner designed to take advantage of namby-pamby types who don't want to kill the wee things. Fact is they are unhygeinic and can cause a lot of damage... I was getting worried that it might take up residence inside the piano or something and chew it to bits :(

As are complicated electric zapping traps - all you need is a spike under tension on a block of wood - they cost a few quid for a really big one, I think they could take my finger off so no rat has a chance.

We had one in my kitkat cupboard :(

Had to take everything out and rip the bottom up. I'd intended to catch it in a bag or something but it moved and the dog saw it before i did. Problem solved i guess.

Can't say i'd appreciate the smell of burning rodent at 4am though! I'll stick to the old spring traps.

We had one a few years back but luckily the cat sorted that one out. Frying rodents does seem a little extreme.

The problem with the traditional traps is that they can get a bit messy - a friend had a rat problem in his garden and several times there was blood + brains spattered around the immediate area. Don't fancy that in my carpet thanks :) His top tip was that Maltesers never fail to catch rats :D

we have 2 cats and all they do is bring us rodents...nearly every morning theres a dead mouse on the doorstep...Not as bad as the time I went to get the milk in and it was a ****ing great big dead pigeon! feathers everywhere

We've only got 1 cat and it likes to do the exact same thing, except its normally rabits and by the time i see them they have no head ;)

My old cat once brought a baby bat in to the house.

However, the cat at my parent's house wouldn't hurt a fly. Literally. I remember it was trying to catch a fly one time and she managed to put her paw on top of it. After two seconds she lifted it up and it just flew away like nothing happened. :o

Same thing happened here once. Woke up and went to the bathroom to find a rabbit laying on the floor. The cat was even kind enough to remove it's head. *shudder*

We once had a massive rat left by the back door for us.
It was too large to be brought through the cat flap

:O

One of our cats brought us in a live pidgeon.
Twice. It was the same one it brought in again after I let it go outside. :(

they are indeed presents, im still half expecting a cow outside with a hoof sticking through the cat flap, brian (the cat) is a right nasty peice of work, we've had everything from field mice to crows :S

Is it just me or are rodent problems becoming more commonplace these days? My mum has problems at her place so I'll be lending her my zapper, and I've spoke to several other people who have issues.

Surely it's something to do with reduced frequency of rubbish collections and people putting out unwashed cans/food containers in the recycling bins attracting vermin?

Flame throwers are very useful in these situations.

Funnily enough, the other night I did use a lighter and a can of sure to try and scare it out from under the fireplace after I heard it scratching around... :p

Unfortunately I didn't get the desired effect of a small ball of flame zipping around the floor (actually that could have worked out quite badly) :p

Just a bit :D

Especially if it tried to climb your curtains or something... :o
