Hey guys,

This Saturday i want to treat the missus tt a nice meal when she comes back from work.

the problem is... the door is hanging off the oven and British Gas are dragging their heals about getting it fixed.

so i have:

- A gas hob
- lots of pans
- a grill
- a microwave
- a 'top oven' ( its in the same place as the grill, it does the same job as an oven but SLOWLY)

Does anyone have any suggestions for a decent 3 course meal for 2? that doesn't need an oven.

she likes all kinds of food but im pretty fussy :P Italian, English or some kind of Indian chicken dish would be good ( but not a curry :O )

my initial thoughts were along the lines of pasta dish for main and some posh ice cream for desert

not too sure on the starter though, borrowing ideas from 'come dine with me' I'm thinking of some kind of pastry, cheese and tomato melt ( i think i can get away with the top oven for these)

Fire away chaps, Im listening :)

starter, just do her a soup, whatever her favourite is sure you can find a nice recipe anywhere on the interwebz, although i reccommend my favourites, potato and leek, and the good old carrot and corriander, all you really need for this is a pan or two and some cutting implements commonly referred to as knives. :D

for the main course you could try doing what i have as one of my "Signature dishes"..

Basically its fusion dish, two styles blended together in one..

a stir-fry curry...

first of all get a good soy sauce, and heat it a wok really hot for a few seconds until it smokes lightly.

then add some curry paste, and simmer it for about a minute or so

chop up all your veg (Spring onions, red onions, pak choi - kind of chinese lettuce, baby, carrots chillies,) A diagnol cut is always impressive to the eye ;).
after browning off the veg for a couple of minutes ( cant give exact time scale as it will vary from kitchen to kitche, depending on the type of wok you use etc) add the meat ( whatever meat you like i like chicken best so that would be my choice), cook the meat for a few minutes until its sealed well.
then to the next part, add you organic yohurt and double cream, mix this well and let it simmer and reduce for around 10-20 minutes, ( this would also be the point to add any extra spices, or a sauce you have prepared i.e. a packeted one or something youve made up yourself)...

after that just add your noodles to the mix, and let them cook themselves for a couple of minutes until just right, then plate (or bowl up) rice is a good alternative to the noodles...

for dessert why not try making riced pudding in a pan , its tough but it can be done, sorry about lack of detail about recipe and method for this but i cant really think of it atm really tired, but im sure you'll be able to find a recipe for a nice pan riced pudding...

anyway, good luck with saturday, hope my post helped just a little

Tesco.

Maccaroni cheese / Korma curry & rice ready meal + Microwave = Job done.

Someone's looking for a good time on Saturday night ;)

With your Italian theme - starter of an Avocado, Tomato and Mozzarella Salad. Your favourite pasta dish for your main course, with a crisp dry white wine. Can't go wrong with an ice cream for dessert like you suggested or failing that lemon sorbet with limonchello liberally drizzled over it. You need something light to counter the heavyness of the pasta.

Strong black coffee afterwards with the rest of the limoncello as a "digestivo".

great advice lads.

soup for starter is a good idea, some fresh chunks of bread would go down a treat aswell.

aggro:
the main you suggested sounds great but might be above my kitchen skills.

Rice pudding is a great idea. as you said though it could be a bit risky.

Im gonna research the soup tonight, make sure i knwo what im doing. desert shouldnt be a problem. just need to decide on a main :O

ill look through the come dine with me website tonight :P

cheers guys.

Any wine reccomendations by the way ? we dont normaly drink it but why not :P. anything cheap enough from the likes of asda / sainsburys

Cajun Chicken

Buy some:
chicken breasts
olive oil
flour
cajun
new potatoes
green beans
tzitski (not sure on spelling and I cannot be bothered to google)

Mix some cajun in a bowl with some flour. Rub some olive oil into both sides of each chicken breast and sprinkle the cajun mix over the breasts. Fry in a pan, adding more cajun if needed. Put some tzitski (not sure on spelling) on top of the cajun chicken once it is cooked and serve with green beans, new potatoes or whatever you fancy. Bloody nice :)

Get a griddle.

Steak, new potatoes, large flat mushrooms, sliced grilled tomato, enjoy.

Win! But add fried onions. And take out the mushrooms the smell of them frying makes me sick.

This thread made me realise I never use my oven, everything is done on the hob, the grill or Mr G Foreman.

Bit odd.

Fajitas for main, simple to cook. Add to it some green salad, nachos (minus all the crap that goes on them) and some coleslaw and maybe sour cream and chive dip. Very light and tasty and hands on, so a bit sexual if the right environments.

Can't beat bolognaise that been ovenised for an hour... stays very very juicy! And you never made lasagne either? :o

Italian white (Pinot Grigio is my favourite) or if you fancy something a bit different try a glass or two of Prosecco as an aperitif (before the food). Don't know if it is cheap, but you shouldn't have to spend more than a tenner on a bottle of pinot.

Italian whites also tend to be less full bodied than their french cousins, so better for occasional/rare drinkers.

I agree with that Limoncello desert recommended above, a very good idea!

I eat out of the tin, raw, and with my fingers. I suggest you try the same, and say to your girlfriend it's some exotic custom in an Asian country, Hwalandiangan or something.
