This isn't new.

There have been many independent bookshops where books that are banned in China were sold and the shop simply closed and owner disappeared.

WeChat is heavily monitored, a western journalist simply posted that famous photo of Tiananmen Square of the guy standing in front of the tank with no commentary and his account was locked. To unlock it he had to agree to new terms and also let the app take a photo of his face.

There are certain keywords that are completely censored on messaging apps, any messages with these words will not get through. The list gets longer everyday.

They also removed the cap for terms for their President to hold office, meaning he is now essentially a king and have the job for life.

China is 1984 in action.

And you wonder why many countries don't want Huawei to run their 5G network.
 
It does bring into question though why people like Jeremy Corbyn celebrate the official visit of Xi Jinping who is physically throwing its own Muslim population into detention camps but protest Trump simply for blocking travel from a handful of Muslim countries. What China is doing is far worse. Trump is accused of being all sorts of things like Dictator/Fascist but China is literally breaking its own laws and creating some kind of digitally enabled totalitarian police state.

And like you say why is our government even entertaining the idea of allowing a Chinese company (who is beholden to the Chinese government) to build our 5G infrastucture when it's at the forefront in China in allowing them to mass surveill and repress their own population?

Isn't this the sort of oppressive regime our D-Day heroes liberated Europe from 75 years ago? the whole concept behind Fascism is that the state is absolute and individuals have no freedom.

Well, let's not start another Trump thread by post No.3...people complaints a lot about Trump but seemingly less noise about China is simply the US is a democracy, China is not.

Back to the topic of China shall we?
 
This is why the freedom of the individual is important and why we should reject people like Corbyn, China is where that road leads to.

You need to work on your time management. If I were in your shoes I’d have created a list of everything I blame on the Tories so I could simply copypasta.

Not my fault that they're at the heart of most of the ******** in this country, and it was quite literally their fault under Major, so what's your point?

Hong Kong was leased in 1898 for 99 years. There was nothing to defend, our contractual ownership of Hong Kong ended :confused:

Technically they could have kept the island and Kowloon itself (NT and all the islands inc the airport was a lease) but logistically it isn't possible the way the city is integrated, a new border and crossing and all sorts would be needed so 50 years autonomy was agreed as a compromise.

But in reality, who is going to do anything if China roll in their tanks, the only thing the world can do is some political shaming and that's about it. No country will send in their army to defend HK over this 50 year treaty, not the UK, not the US.
 
It's a good thing Honk Kong doesn't exist then. We didn't even attempt to defend the Island and Kowloon, then again considering what happened in Singapore 55 years earlier, perhaps it was for the best.
 
I was over in China last week (Shanghai and Wuxi), it is surprising how locked down everything really is. You hear about it all the time but until you experience it yourself... it is staggering. Setting up servers, needing a small bit of software/driver so forgetting yself tried loading up chrome and googling the manufacturer. no page not available, tried yahoo etc ..page not available. The only site I could get to load was cn.bing.com and given it is filtered/monitored it took about an hour for a small file (25-35mb). Pretty much any .com site runs downloads at a max of 20kbs while something like a .info site I managed to download 5gb in a matter of an hour or two.
Whatsapp etc simply doesnt work via any wifi I could find, public or our private connection but over 3g/4g it just about worked so there is a little relaxation for some methods of comms.
I also found out that all of China's entire internet in and out of the country does so through just three physical locations so that monitoring is as easy as possible for the government agencies.
Even this past week, our UK mail server ip was blocked by chinanet etc (I tested this with a few other of our ips and they worked fine) leaving me to have to request a new static IP for the UK office.

That said, it was an awesome place to visit and hope to go back at some point in the next year or two. Hopefully the leadership listen to their people and soften their stance even just a little.
