Considering a Media Wall

The family is interested in creating a media wall with wall panels, inspired by another home they've seen. If I'm going to undertake this project, I want to do it right.

My Thoughts:

The room is long, and I'll be using one of the longer walls. I'm concerned that dark colors like black might make the room feel even more narrow and dim.

I'm thinking a fireplace would be a great addition to the wall. The old one wouldn't fit the style, and radiators aren't the best option to use if you are mostly in one room for hours. I want to ensure the TV area can accommodate both smaller and larger TVs for future flexibility. I'm also considering adding ambient lighting, similar to the Ambilight style.

Other features I've seen on media walls include storage, speakers, additional lighting, and even metallic accents.

Given the cost, I want to do this right. I'm hoping for ideas and suggestions. If you have a media wall, what did you include? Are there any changes you wish you'd made?

I thought about it in thread below (with pics) but decided against it. If you put a tv above a fire it ends up too high. Plus you're losing floor area if you stud out your walls.

I'm glad I went with what I went with

For another room I also did a slat wall:

I considered that, but I know that until I can convince them to drop the subject, it'll be a while, and you know what that entails. The floor space wouldn't be a major issue, as the area is narrow and primarily used for the TV unit and fireplace.

Another issue is that they've always wanted the wiring hidden, but the current setup makes that impossible. That's another reason they've given me.

They're thinking of something more like this. It would be slightly higher than my current setup (low TV unit).

Which is why im looking for options

I quite like those options to be fair. Just remember that electric fires don't kick out too much heat and relatively expensive depending if you have solar/battery etc.

Its also worth having a look at electric fires because even the premium ones I thought looked naff.

We already have an electric fire, so that's no longer an issue. (I initially disliked it because I missed the natural gas fireplace, but finding natural gas was difficult at the time.) I'm still learning about different types of panels and their prices. £50 seems very expensive to me.

This thing, seam to be some new trend.

You put the TV on the wall and add shelves and lights around it, and in 90% of cases that slatted wood panelling. Instead of just putting in on the wall or tv cabinet. In 10 years time everyone will be ripping them out and chucking it in the skip along with their dark blue kitchen cabinets.

We already have the dark blue kitchen cabinets, and are planning a media wall

The considerations I'm making for our media wall design are ensuring one of the compartments is large enough to fit an M-ATX open air bench table in, and has hidden active ventilation / cooling within that compartment.

But do you have the corner sofa to complete the trifecta

so no hard and fats rule then....just your preference and thats it.
Of course there are no 'rules' its your own house to do with what you want. However the general idea is prevent neck pain, high TVs are notorious for it, the general guide is the TV is mounted so the middle is at eye height when seated.
