Meg 2: The Trench

Went to see this last night on the old meerkat movies.

Started off like a new Transporter film. Lots of references to other shark films in this one, Deep Blue Sea, Jaws (obviously)
Megashark vs Giant Octopus
etc..

Lots of bad acting/decisions made in this film and plays out like a sci-fi shark B movie which was a real shame because the first one was not a bad shark film.

Just watch Megashark vs Giant Octopus. You get more shark and octopus action than Meg 2

its £320m now, the Chinese audience must love Statham.
Both this and the 1st one made a boatload of money in China, more than in US, iirc. It's a co chinese production/distribution with a Hollywood company, or something like that. It guarantees the Hollywood company a Chinese release (which not all hollywood films get these days) and they also have to use some chinese actors as part of the deal. Maybe even have to feature China as a location. Can't recall the exact details. Not good for films long term imo, but it's Statham and Sharks so I ignored the politics behind it :)

Yeap, over $100m came just from China!

However, even at $320m so far thats still at the bottom end of it's expected box office which, based on a $185m budget, means it's probably going to lose money depending on how much the marketing costs and what the Chinese cinema percentage cut is.

saw this last night, wasnt as much fun as the first. Did a single chinese character die? even a chinese extra? i didnt see one. Too much of a chinese influence.
chinese hero "clicky" guy is literally in the mouth of his pet meg then somehow teleports out of it and survives

6/10 for effort.

The trailer set the expectation that it won't be serious. Just watched and I don't know they didn't keep the somewhat more serious like the 1st one. It was beyond stupid how the main cast were surviving all the death scenes and Statham impaling a meg.

Arr!

Watched this last night with the wife. First 45mins was quality, and then it just went downhill and turned into a joke. Way too much Chinese influence, hilarious mockery of deep sea pressure etc. I don't know how they've turned Jonas Taylor into a generic kung-fu expert that Statham plays in every film but its sad it has come to this. Don't get me started about the Chinese super hero/comedy guy...

I thought the Megs looked excellent (battled scarred as they should be) on screen but I was disappointed we didn't see much of the other big bad.

6/10

Watched this over the weekend and it was silly stuff indeed but to be expected. One thing that annoyed me more than anything was that people were getting eaten right, left and centre, smashed, squashed and in one instance explosive decompression but hardly and blood and zero gore. No wonder its a 13 rated movie.
