Melted Panel

Why would anyone break into a room, start soldering on the desk or straighten their hair?

Think this one's for Sherlock.

Definately agree though that no monitor electronics can hurt the frame however badly it explodes. Most LCD panels in monitors have metal casing so the electronics shouldn't actually get to it at all. (unlike laptops where the LCD panels aren't protected by anything apart from the laptop casing)

All the other plug sockets in the house had been wired to a bomb. The only safe bet to have beautiful straightened hair was to break into his room.

The suspect broke in, plugged in the straightener sand waited for them to become warm. They then proceeded to straighten their hair.

They left the room leaving them on.

The evil tooth fairy of death was visiting a neighbour when they spotted the hot straighteners. The evil tooth fairy (of death) moved then, and clamped them onto the frame of the monitor.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Smokes Pipe.

Not Insane

I've also been thinking about the possibility of someone using the monitor as a surface to iron clothes on. With the iron being left on the frame of the monitor.

If you do catch the person who did that do the same thing to their face and ask them if they like it (please note the law may frown upon this action and I am merely suggesting it and not condoning it. Any injury as a result of this is purely the fault of the person taking my suggestion and putting it to good use)

Also, maybe it was a really big kid with a really big magnifying glass.

As suggested above though, look around the room for any signs tat someone else was in the room or for anything else that's melted.

Evil tooth fairy's often leave a trail of pixie dust. Keep your eyes pealed.

Actually just thinking about it I picked up my shaving mirror this morning which was was kinda facing the screen. I wonder if the sun could have been reflected in off that and focused.....

As far as I know I have not ****** anyone off recently but who knows. I do have insurance yeah.

You'd have to be extremely lucky (and unlucky) for that to have happened, everything would have to be just right.

Maybe it was a cleaner? What day do they usually clean your room? Are you in a hall of residence or a privately owned house? If you are in a hall then a favourite 'game' people like to play is seeing which doors you can unlock with your key... As room keys tend to be very simlair there is a good chance that people will be able to unlock multiple doors with their keys, it's just a case of finding out which ones!

What's that to the left of the monitor, is it a hot air heater?
Yes, also known as an xbox 360 :D

I wanna know if this shaving mirror is just a plain mirror or one that enlarges the image, because a plain mirror doesn't focus light and wouldn't be any worse for the screen than it being sat out in the sunlight, but one that gives an enlarged image will focus the light. Still sounds unlikely though, but so is someone braking into your room and attacking your monitor with hair straightenners :p

Yes it is one which enlarges the image... No one can get into my room (as far as I know). I live in a house not halls of residence. You would think that the burn would be more of a line though due to the sun moving in the sky. The frame is burned then there is a small bit unburned then the actual burn on the screen (going left to right). Weirdness.

I think the shaving mirror theory can easily be ruled out to be honest. I don't think it would be able to melt plastic.

Well it enlarges the image, so I guess it also focuses it so same effect as a magnifying glass. Though I would have thought the sun would have moved before it was able to cause that kinda burn.

Put the mirror back in the same place and angle and see if any light falls on where the monitor was during the day. If it does see if it's hot enough to burn some paper. I agree it sounds unlikely though, but they do use cheap soft plastic on TFTs.

Does it still work? Could give you a clue whether anything inside it blew or overheated.

Every theory sound unlikely so far though. Don't suppose you have contents insurance being a student, I know I never did.

Massively unlucky if that happened. There is a show on the discovery channel called "Myth Busters", they built a gigantic mirror array to try and light a home made wooden boat, and didn't get it to light.

The main problem here is that your screen would needed to have been the exact distance away from the monitor so that the focal length allowed a focused dot on the screen. Furthermore, why wouldn't there just be a single focused hole, why the scorching on the surround? I suppose the sun could have moved, but even still, I think it would be incredibly unlucky for the mirror to have been the cause.

Works totally fine apart from the burned bit :) and yeah I am insured on my parents policy.
