Hi,

I'm just about to order an I7 950 and asus rampage 3 motherboard. I want to clock the I7 as much as possible really, would this ram hold it back in any way?. Forgive my ignorance as this will be the first I7 system build. I understand its different to overclock than the core2 quads and wondered if memory this high is needed to get to say 4.2ghz or higher. I have looked for reviews but also can't seem to find any info on this ram:confused: any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

I have custom water cooling. Thanks for that info I didn't realise the new intel cpu's was out so soon. I think I may just sit back till the new year then and see what happens.

You can clock your CPU to 4GHz with DDR3-1200 ram. The way ram clocks with the 1136 socket CPU is not the same as the 775 boards. Previously the NB located on the motherboard controlled the ram. Now the memory controller is on die and contained in the CPU. The term is IMC. It is a good idea to read up about how to clock the X58 socket and you will see it is pretty straight forward.

However that being said, I do not think that a REIII is an ideal board for a first time overclocker but hey we all have to start some place I guess. It is aimed at the extreme user - sub zero with LN2 and such. But it is a fine piece of kit and I love mine.
