Excuse my ignorance guys but i would like some advice on the following issue.

I currently have a DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-011-DF), with 2 x 512MB Geil PC4000 DDR500 CL=2.5-7-4-4 (whatever that means!)

I am desperate to upgrade to 2mb but want to know what is the best way to do this. I would like to keep my existing memory if poss but budget is tight. I don't want to drastically affect the speed of my pc.

Many thanks for your time.

I would say youre better off having just 2x 1Gig sticks in because if you three or four sticks you need to lower the command rate which drops performance by about 3%. But as you say you're on a budget, you dont really have much choice unless you sell it on, and put the money towards new ones! :p

Depends on your processor core too, some can handle 4 sticks better than others and your uses of the machine as far as, how important a little performance drop would be, compared to the advantage of the new memory.

Processor is an AMD x2 4400 - i don't mind a little performance drop. Computer is mainly used for 3ds max, photoshop and the odd game of battlefield2.

If i go with 4 sticks will it be a severe drop in performance, if not can anyone recommend what memory i should be looking at.

Again, if i do need to go down the 2 stick road, what memory should i be looking at?

Many thanks again.

The G.Skill 2GB DDR HZ PC4000 is your best bet. Unfortunatley it is out of stock and I'm after some of it. I've got £160 in my pocket but OCUK are out of stock :(

2T isn't by any means what could be called a "severe" performance drop no. If you go that route you just have to be careful that you actually do need the 2GB of memory, cos otherwise your taking a hit in the majority of applications for the benefit of a few.
