Read in the news about the Garrick gentlemen's club, the row seems to have been rumbling on for a while

Personally I don't see the problem having a gentleman only club, maybe men would like some time to themselves away from the bother of females.

There seems to be plenty of female only clubs, which don't seem to be getting the same attention. Maybe it's just the prestige of the Garrick, but I just don't understand the fuss being made.

Unfortunately I can't afford the likes of Garrick but if I could I think it would be a 2nd home for me so to speak.

I'm a cantankerous grumpy old fart though and I'm probably missing something

It’s where rich and powerful men go to network. By excluding women, you exclude them from that opportunity.

Men still have Warhammer clubs if they fancy some time away from female company.

I was reading some old free comics online a few months ago. It was split into sections, either by date or the target audience.

The boys and girls had about 10 comics devoted to them each.

Through different story types you knew at the very least what was expected of you.

I think because of the negative complaints from people who didn't understand the purpose things went too far the other way.

When it came to men only bars, or tap rooms in pubs, I used to believe what I was told that it's men just wanting to keep women out because they don't want "little women" getting in the way.

But I found out the real idea behind it. Because some men are weak when it comes to women. A random group of men can't fully bond with a woman around because there will always be at least one male that will instantly dump all male loyalty to focus entirely on the woman (which can be a red flag for her). So the men were the weak ones and other men knew it.

Men get distracted when women are round and start doing stupid things.

Also we have an history of men only places and they introduce women into the same space. Women want to change things to make them feel comfortable.

Which ones? I’m not aware of any private members clubs that are women only.

There was one that started in NYC but fell apart and had alleged issues re: racism or perhaps "white feminism" etc.

Journalist Amanda Hess reported that many women were drawn to seek employment at The Wing, "eager to work in beautiful spaces and in the company of women."[59] Most of the current and former employees she interviewed were excited to begin but became disillusioned, the 26 employees interviewed citing low pay and mistreatment of Black members of staff. Receptionists and event staff did not expect their jobs to include cleaning duties.[59] At Wing events, employees might "find themselves to be the only Black women in the room," where members and their guests "could be casually racist."

It's not clear how much that is about actual racism or just "microaggressions" and other woke crimes. I'd not assume that professional feminist types in a women's club are likely to be a hotbed of KKK activity.

I definitely have mixed feelings about any club being for one gender only, simply on equality grounds. But given that women actively want women's only clubs (and I can understand why they would) then I don't object to men also having gentlemen only clubs. The guy who was complaining about it should either not have joined or should have left voluntarily when his values didn't match those of the club he was a member of.

Men are barred from the WI.

Can men join the WI?

No. The Women's Institute is based on the idea of bringing women together, providing them with educational opportunities and the chance to make a difference in their communities. Therefore, the WI is set up as an educational charity with a constitution which states that membership is only open to women.
