Mental illness games

anyone who hasnt said Eternal Darkness for the GC is fail :/

Your freaking head falls off!! The game maker will make you think your going mentally ill with the tricks they play on you.

Dead Space would be a good shout for atmosphere

Was thinking of mentioning it too, ashamed to say that I had it on my shelf for years along with barely played GC :(

Eternal Darkness was the first thing to spring to mind.

Shame theres only 2 more layers of Too Human to get through before we may see a sequal. :(

@ OP

Show your original post to your GP and you might be able to play the little publicised, yet very popular role play game SECTIONED! :D

I know what he means, it was the whole...psychological aspect of Bioshock that really brought me in. Listening to their conversations, or a woman crying into a pram only to find out there's a gun inside there...

Definatley taking some pointers from this thread!

Nurse, time for my pills.

for some reason bits of this thread have had me laughing my head off in its deadpan manner.

:D

I kind of liked the concept of 'altered' state with Max Payne and the strange baby episode, iirc.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a good one that you already mentioned. It's not so boring if you play it with mods such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Complete 2009 or L.U.R.K. mod.
Some say that The Secret of Monkey Island series is based on the imagination of a little boy at a theme park.
Psychonauts (Bit consoley / cartoony but weird)
Little Big Adventure (Same)
Final Fantasy VII was based around events and facts that the main character (Cloud) couldn't recall because he had amnesia.

I was going to suggest this too. It's a point and click adventure game with at least one action style level that I remember. That involved running a maze to escape a scarecrow, in isometric view.

The game play is probably pretty poor by today’s standards, but the cut scenes and story development is what made it for me at the time. Obtained a good review in Computer Gaming World magazine, which is why I got it.

I would recommend the upcoming game Amnesia, which was mentioned before. Condemned is also another game to try.

There is also a Source engine mod under the name of Korsakovia, whcih features a man who is suffering from Korsakoff's Syndrome. The game is based in the illusions or horrific dreams of the man while he is in hospital (You can hear nurses and doctors talking about him). There are no guns in the game, just a flashlight and a crowbar as he travels through his illusion in a mental asylum. It's quite a scary game playing it late at night with headphones on. It fits the criteria of mental illness.

EDIT: Here is a video from Youtube showing a part of the game. I guess you can use it to see what the game is like: Link

*I WOULDN'T SUGGEST WATCHING THE VIDEO IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THE SURPRISE AND SCARY MOMENTS*
