Only half an hour ago I was sitting in a resturant having a meal with a few friends.

A couple we know, both Police officers were talking about there future, plans they had for moving to Dumfrieshire possibly even New Zealand. We were all laughing and joking, I personally had only spoken to them both a few times but could see what decent a couple they were.

They had come to the resturant on there bikes...

On there way home to Lordswood Chatham riding along the A2 M2 a White Van man obviously oblivious to what was around him has just clipped my friend Mark..

He is now dead!!

His wife and close friends are inconsolable.... Im just shocked and stunned, I cant believe it..

I did not know him very well but I have just sat next to him for an hour.. Im shaking... its just awful awful news

Please be careful on your bikes ffs... people just don't look

I used to laugh at what people said about white van men...until one nearly wiped me out a week or two ago. I'll try and upload the video of the event.

Sorry to hear that news mate - I can't imagine the grief you and his family are experiencing right now. Stay upbeat for them.

Basmic, close shave, he was indicating though, however, from watching the video he wasn't when you intially pulled alongside him, looks like it was a last minute decision, such a fool drivers are by not checking their mirrors :@

sorry to hear that mate.

basmic, you were right next to him riding down the side of everyone. No wonder he didnt see you. Something like this happened in spain with me and a mate on a moped, but we were shooting down past everyone

Basmic, although the van driver clearly didn't look, you have to take a significant amount of blame as you put yourself if that risky situation.
You undertook static traffic heading towards a works sign that clearly would have meant you needed to pull further out into the lane, and you also positioned yourself almost beside a vehicle at a junction.
Both stupid risks, and ones that you got away with lightly.

It isn't automatically the cage drivers fault - we bikers need to take some responsibility for the way we conduct ourselves on the road.

Scottfree, very sorry to hear of your loss, bikers are so much more at risk as the consequences of what would be trivial incidents in cars, can have a fatal outcome on a bike. RIP. :(

I've spent all my life around bikers and I go to at least 4 bike rallies a year (mainly because I'm gigging with my band) and I can't count how many friends I've lost.
You can be the greatest biker in the world but you don't stand a chance if a car decides to cut you up or pull out on you.
Most bikers I know also have limps or dodgy arms.

One of the worst incidents I had was during the mid 70's. I witnessed a biker take a corner too wide and drove head on into a car. It was a brand new bike and he had brand new leathers/helmet on. I stayed with him for about 30 mins until the ambulance came but he only groaned. later that night I had a phone call telling me one of my best mates had been killed at Heron Cross and I told them I was there. I didn't recognise him because everything was new.

I was coming back from The Highwayman around 1978 and the driver lost control and I basically fell off the back and rolled with no injuries. He continued down the road for about 300 yards on his side and he ended up in traction for 4 months and horrific injuries. That was the last time I got on a bike.

I'm really sorry to hear this :(, but as with most situations please don't judge all people who drive van's just because a few of them let the side down.

Just playing with the accessories available to me. No harm in that.

I understand I took a risk attempting to undertake the van before a junction, but had he indicated I would have either went to the front of the van or remained at the back until he turned left.

That really is awful news I didn't expect you to say that when I was reading along, very shocking. His wife must be absolutely distraught. Sorry to hear this mate.

Basmic, you were behind the van at the time so you should have given him right of way. He shouldn't have to wait for you to overtake him on the inside if you are behind him

I can quite clearly seeing him indicating left as he turns.

I was turning left into a sharp turn once, so indicated left and moved to the centre of the road. The retard behind me decides it would be a good time to overtake on the left at speed, were it not for the fact that I suspected his stupidity he could have smashed my car nicely.

I'm not an expert, but I always thought drivers were meant to give clear signals before turning? Not at the last second...

Its only your word its the last second.
There is a full 28 seconds where you are out of sight of his indicator until you see his indicator at the lights.
if I were 3 cars behind I certainly wouldn't be indicating and I'll presume you didn't have your arm up indicating going left for the 28 seconds.
