Got the following text message this morning:

'Alan Day VW would like to inform you that our records indicate you are due a cambelt please call 0208 920 9045. July special £399inc. Thank you'

So they've obviously got my car and mileage on a database somewhere. I'm just surprised, being VW, they didn't realise my car doesn't actually have a cambelt..

I wonder how far through the process I would have had to have gone before they'd work this out :p And I wonder how many people would have blindly payed..

Rant over :D

I think they just spam people that own VWs, as opposed to having some chassis number comparison database. Even if only 50% have a belt, I doubt it matters to them as the recipient will simply ignore the message as you will do.

Besides a chain isn't entirely service-free is it? It might eventaully need checking and adjustment.

Why don't you take the car in and see what they say? i.e. Would they really go through with booking the car in on the assumption that you don't know any better.

If you have the time on your hands this could be interesting, especially if it got to the point where they took the car, gave it you back and attempted to charge you!

^this, then get on to the old watchdog dodgy traders people and set them up :D

They should, it should be an oil filled tensioner which eventually fail, so he actually means change it, not adjust it.

I'm not even sure which VW's have a camchain anyways, mine has a belt and chain due to the belt driving the exhaust cam and the chain drives the inlet via the VVTI adjuster.

They shouldn't have any problems anyway, saying that the VX z22se has a few problems with them. But mostly people letting the oil go so low as they burn oil fairly quick.

But VX where fixing them under warrenty.

But if it came to that, I wouldn't really be able to make much fuss without admitting that I knew all along the car didn't have a cambelt, and then they'd probably charge me for wasted labour. It'd be interesting though. Alas I don't have the time :p

They seem to be a bit overzealous with the text messages today - I've just got another!

'Hi Alan Day VW, SPECIAL OFFER £119 Minor service & £229 for Major service please call 0208 920 4095 to arrange appt.ASAP'

It's not even well written. Think I'll be shooting off a STOP message.

Ring them up and book in your "W12 Phaeton" for the £119 service - see what they say :D

I had a call from Audi a couple of weeks back claiming my car needed a service and asking for my mileage. I told them that my mileage is none of their business and I am well aware of my servicing requirements and presently it is well within its service window. The contact centre operative then used the words "but I still need your mileage" at which point I decided the call was finished.

Well I called the number in the text and it was someone's direct line in a call centre. Went through to answerphone though. Called up head office and asked for my name to be taken off the marketing contact list.
