After receiving some advice from users on here I have started running a trial of the MessageLabs SPAM and Virus filtering service on our inbound mail.

I told the company we were trialling before that I was running a trial from message labs and they have responded with this:

"They don’t need to try ML because we have a better service, not least because they won’t have access to real time logs and therefore will have much less control. If they produce a false positive it sometimes doesn’t appear in their logs for up to 4 hours and even then <our company> won’t have access to the logs. It is a support call and that can take hours to deal with"
Names changed to protect the innocent

What are your experiences with this? In terms of real time logs, 4 hours for false positives to appear and support calls being dealt with slowly?

I am a daily MessageLabs admin for the company I work for.

Any mail that gets diverted because of type of attachment (ie jpeg or swear words etc) gets sent to internal admin account by default, so if this is why its been blocked then we can easily forward it on by request within minutes of being notified by user (user obviously gets immediate mail from Messagelabs saying an email has been blocked)

The only time Messagelabs have problems ( I have found) is when a whole email (incl header and attachment) is over the size limit we set of 10MB, and that is always returned to sender as undeliverable - which personally think is fair enough.

Any Blocked email / domain address etc takes around 4 hours I believe to be updated from their website, its probably less but thats what max is stated as each time one is added.

Sorry for not being any more helpful but I cant really see any other issue you may come across (probably being stupid but cant think what a "false positive" is in this respect)

Hope this is helpful for you

The original company you were trialing with are doing their best to sell you their product, not message labs. (which BTW is good, never had the issue they advise where I work, and we use it)

The 10MB Limit can be altered in the client portal of MessageLabs.

Been using them for over 4 years, never had a problem with them at all.
