i dunno, its really affordable, and i think is a great replacement for quest 2. not something for existing quest 2 owners to jump to, but a great 1st VR headset or those with a quest 1 who skipped the 2.

Well it had to have some of the old tech, lenses and screens are an obvious one. Without that, where's the saving.
It gives access to new games at a lower price point.
Even allowing reuse of custom lenses from the q2 I believe.

I think you are missing the point of the 3S. if you want a highish end headset then get a quest 3 (which has had a tasty price cut)
the 3S is an entry level headset but it's way better than the quest 2 because it can play all the newest quest titles and with the quest 3 graphical improvements.
the only thing missing now from the line up is a high end headset. the 12 month delay for the quest pro thanks to COVID chip shortage really messed that up.
I would like to see a quest pro 2 launch with what ever chip the quest 4 will have in it. most of the other stuff they can keep the same as on the quest pro (but with the better pass through of course) ideally before the quest 4. bonus points if oled display.
not sure if it will happen however

That would require the better screens as well, at which point, it's going to be a similar price to the 128gb q3... so just get the q3.
It's literally made to be a budget headset, a budget headset cannot have the same hardware of the better version, and be somehow cheaper.

i have to wonder how durable it is vs kids
the down side is more kids in VR.
i hope they do some parental controls so under 18s have seporate lobbies as example

My boy is staying with his q2. Those rings have probably stopped a lot of very painful finger injuries as he hits things in his room!
