Metal Gear Solid 4

I'll believe it when I see Kojima pull up his sleeve and reveal a tattoo of snake.

Orange Box is nothing impressive surely.. My steam fold takes up 16gb with css, hl2dm, hl2, hl2 ep1, hl2 ep2, tf2, and Portal I don't think metal gear will be coming to 360 least hope not cause its the only reason why i got a ps3 lol :D

People always go on about DVD9 being crippling for games developers, but then 5 games come out on one disc. Not just 5 ordinary games, but 5 very, very good ones.

Don't forget though, 5 games that all share the same engine and other content. I personally think DVD9 is fine for now, but in the next couple of years we're going to see more proper use of BD/HD-DVD.

I still think we're quite some time away from the game that won't fit on a DVD, and multiple discs wouldn't be suitable. I'm not sure we'll even see that game this gen.

I think it's believable that MGS4 could fit onto a DVD9. MGS games don't use much pre-rendered video footage, instead the vast majority of it is rendered in real time. Really the only thing that could take up a lot of space is the recorded dialogue, and I would assume there's not going to be significantly more than the previous games. Therefore the only reason it would take up more space than the previous games is higher res textures.

But people question whether you can get an engine on there supporting one game. That still got the content of 5 games, in particular 3 games which don't share the same content, Half Life 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2.
We will need the next-generation of discs such as Blu-Ray or HD-DVD in the next console generation, but in this one I feel DVD9 is the optimal choice,.

It works I know, But it's not optimal is it, But let's not go off on a tangent about it :p

Multiple discs would be suitable, MGS has never been an open ended series.
Of course, I was speaking in general terms anyway.

Can't think of many games where multiple discs would be a hassle, sandbox type games, sports games maybe. Pretty much any game where it's basically just a set of levels (which is still most games), multiple discs are fine.

it's sound that takes up a lot of space. If he puts an uncompressed lossless PCM soundtrack on then it will take up more space than a DVD can hold. Certainly would add to the cinematic experiance for those fortunate enough to own the right equipment.

Using uncompressed audio would be pointless when you could use lossless compression like flac.

People go on about how DVD9 is enough for current gen games. I've read a couple of times where content had to be cut short on a game in order to fit it onto a DVD9 for the 360. One prime example, if I can remember the name correctly is PGR4, they had to take alternating times of the day out of the game due to the lack of space. And Gears of War for example, apparently a great game, but also from what I hear quite a short one, because I remember reading that the devs said a single level takes up over 1GB of space on the disc.

So all this "space is not an issue" is utter bs. Sure, just because you have loads of space doesn't mean you'll have a huge long game, prime example: Heavenly Sword, ok-ish game, that managed to waste... I mean use up the 25GB on something that doesn't appear to make any difference to the game ¬_¬

But isn't this one supposed to be open ended in a middle eastern city?

May be wrong and probably am but i though Kojima said in the big 10 minute vid that it was an open ended city.

GOW could have been released on 2 DVD's then, so I am not so sure about that, more like they struggled to make the release date and they just rushed it out the later levels suggest that to me anyway. Not to sure about PGR4 but I can't see how different times of day would take up much space, they could manage it on MSR on a CD ;)

Most PS3 games are only 20gig etc cause they duplicate the same data over and over to reduce read speeds do they not...

They've all been open ended in the sense that, for the most part, you can freely travel back to places you've already been. Really it depends what's taking up the space. If it is the audio that's taking up so much space, it wouldn't matter that it was multiple discs because most lines of dialogue will only be heard once. Pretty sure this was the case for MGS1. If it's textures and level geometry, then it would be a problem because you'd have to change discs every time you move through a certain area.

While it is more open-ended (eg. more routes) than the past installments, its not open ended in the extreme of GTA or Burnout Paradise. Of course I haven't played the game yet, but I did see a video recently talking about how there's still one main route to get to the one objective.

The trailer I saw had loading screens between each few streets or so. Kojima had a pretty weak excuse for that - 'it's to remind you that you are playing a game'. Classic!

I'm sure the Sony PR department have a big pot of arrogant comments where Sony developers or Phil Harrison (Mr Arrogant himself) just pluck one out at random and say it. Really gets my goat.

Either way, I'm sure it'll be a decent game like the 2nd one at worst.

The new combat mechanics pretty much sealed the deal for me, if there was one thing the MGS games didn't do very well it was the combat and movement - you were very limited in your agility and versatility, and aiming is horrible. That looks all but a distant memory now, thanks to Ryan Paton, a very smart man Kojima Productions hired to oversee the project. He pretty much looked at a lot of other games that do urban warfare combat very well (such as Ghost Recon, Gears of War, Splinter Cell) and took feedback. MGS4 plays completely different to the earlier games yet retains familiarity. I'll be shocked if I find it less fun to play than MGS3 or MGS2.
