Metal Gear Solid. The Phantom pain.

Just an FYI, I started this again last night and the current mod on Nexus for the FoV works. It's only applicable in the 'free camera' view, but it makes a HUGE difference.

When running/aiming/first person no change is there. But in general, it makes it so much better.

Been playing this myself for the past few weeks. My first MGS experience and really enjoying it so far. I couldn't find any live links for the mod that allows you to play the game in 21:9 - can you give me a steer for that?

Did you play Ground Zeroes before this? It is like the first chapter of the game.

Anyway, I started playing this again the other day too...In what will be my third playthrough. There is nothing quite like it. Yes, the story, and way it is told is not exactly what we all wanted from a MGS game but the gameplay is just so good.

I finished Snake Eater last week too. I'm so sad the series is finished. Kojima created something truly amazing. It is such a shame we never really got to see Phantom Pain in all it's glory!

Thanks. Found a few live links there. Did try one although the game crashed on start up - will try one of the others...

Yeah I did play Ground Zeroes first although, whilst I enjoyed the cinematics I wasn't actually that fussed on the gameplay and didn't go on to play Phantom Pain for a few months - maybe I just wasn't in the mood that day as I'm really enjoying the Phantom Pain.

Awesome game, I'm still playing it now but I bet it would be epic on the PC....

I was really late to the party with mgs5 , it was free with PSN one month and I still didn’t play it for some time.
Once I started it though i couldn’t put it down , best game I’ve played in years.
Got all the trophies on PS4 and then bought the pc one to play through again :p it is a little more detailed on pc but not by much , the PS4 pro got a slight resolution bump which helps a little

Agreed, I'll never forget that atmosphere and bosses.
I think its because it goes back to the start in the 1960s, The original Big Boss. Characters are the best out of any of the games too i think. I actually tried going through MGS3 again to get the Predator Camo. To do that you need to shoot and find all hidden frogs. I got so far but then forget, or lost save game etc.

There is certainly nothing like it in the MGS series. Because it's not an MGS game :p Not only the story is poor/absent (almost entirely), but the gameplay is not even close to classic MGS gameplay.

Regenerating health; seeing through walls (which you can turn off but makes the game almost impossible and ratchets up the frustration to 11 - try it!); stealth entirely optional (I had much more success with run-and-gun - you can still S rank if you're quick, even with 0 stealth; and actually Snake can take so many hits it's really easy playing this way); AI companions who can literally complete the missions for you; base building which was (imho) filler junk; lack of boss fights (there were 2?); replaying the same areas again and again to progress; tedious, empty landscape; lack of set-pieces; lack of variety.

At least the Raiden game (Revengeance) was good. It was a more MGS game than MGS5. All the crazy MGS eccentricity and yet it was made by Platinum Games! MGS5 by comparison was an unfocused, poorly paced, slog through a mostly barren desert landscape. Then a mostly barren ??? landscape. A game where you had to "make your own fun".

MGS 3 is the best MGS i think. Still great to play now on PCSX2 in HDR with AA etc.
Without a doubt. Sadly it was steadily downhill after 3. I didn't rate 4 highly but at least it was clearly an MGS game.

MGS 5 could have been a new franchise. It genuinely could.

I actually disliked revengence the most. I like phantom pain.

Guess it comes down to whether you want a tightly focused, mostly linear, highly scripted, story-rich game with a boat load of cut scenes stitched together with gameplay segments, or a go-your-own-way, make-your-own-fun, vast playground of possibility to dick around in.

Revengeance gave me what I wanted and mostly what I expected, plus a bit more. MGS5 didn't give me either. Undoubtedly it did some things really well - just they weren't the things I was looking for, having really enjoyed previous MGS games.

The Phantom Pain is my first MGS experience and whilst I'm enjoying it ok, it do think I would prefer the experience of the earlier games you are describing. I'm 45 hours in to the game with only 26% completion and it is starting to get a bit repetitive. It's the intrigue that is keeping me going; what the hell is the deal with Quiet, who is this fire guy and the floating dude in the gas mask? I'm trying to cut down on the side quests now to progress the story a bit further...

I don't want to spoil anything but... don't expect too many answers. Or closure. Or even an ending.

To understand who the guy in the mask is (and several of the other characters....), you really need to have played the previous titles. Basically, the guy in the mask is a younger version of one of the main antagonists in other games in the series; Psycho Mantis. I'd suggest you Google the name, but it might lead to spoilers. The Burning Man was a friend of Snakes, however I can't remember what manner of convoluted trickery led him to being as he is in this game. Lastly, depending on your choices and mission progression ratings through the game, Quiet will reveal her true role in the story prior to the big reveal.

Personally, I really enjoyed The Phantom Pain. However, it had been a long time since I played a Metal Gear game, so I had to read up about certain plot elements before jumping into it. As with other games in the series, they sort of make sense provided you don't over think them. The ending of this game is arguably the easiest to follow imo.

It was OK I suppose, I think when I played it I was expecting more mgs type gameplay rather than an arcade type experience with a ninja sword.

Go and play MGS1 on gamecube for best experience (emulator) and mgs 2 and 3. You wont be disappointed, there all good in the own right. MGS 2 was epic and MGS3 was even more Epic than 2nd. In MGS3 Ocelot is a young cocky kid just out of military school. You also see how he got the name Ocelot as the 6 shooter was originally not his choice of pistol, that is until snake game him some advice and had a word with him.

Scene here, watching this is making me want to play it again lol

MGS5 is meant to be played without markers and "seeing through the walls" imho. With the training wheels on, the tension is gone and the game is easy and boring. I've left slo-mo "reflex" on instead, but tried to only use it the most desperate situations. Stealth - and the rest of gameplay mechanics - are the best ever as far as MGS goes.
That level was easily the most frustrating level of the game for me
It's the last (ever?) Snake vs Metal Gear, it's supposed to be hard :P
