Metro 2033

OK its £6, bought :p Not sure if i'll have time to get it downloaded tonight but should be worth a crack!

Might even give me an excuse to upgrade my ageing 8800GT :D

I played the demo recently and after all the negative reviews, I too expected it to be rubbish. For me, it was far from that - it actually was one of the most interesting FPS in recent years, from the parts I played in the demo. So I may have to buy this, just as soon as my PC is sorted out, so then I can play it with a decent frame rate.:p

One thing I don't understand, is Crysis is rated so highly and this (which I consider superior) is rated so low? I don't get it. Maybe it's because Metro 2033 is more atmospheric and not everyone gets what it's about and perhaps Crysis is more accessible for casual gamers?

Crysis? For casual gamers? :p

When Crysis first came out there was nothing like it, whereas Metro 2033 is quite similar to a lot of current games and came out during an oversaturated market amidst more stringent criticism. A lot of people will say Metro is more enjoyable, but the bar to achieving 90+% scores have considerably risen now.

I remember Crysis coming out, and I just didn't think it was all that great gameplay and story wise - graphics is another thing entirely. Metro 2033 for me, has much more interesting gameplay and story, but that's just me.

The reason why I said Crysis for casual gamers, is because it's the type of shooter that I would have thought would attract more people, based on the gameplay it has, and therefore I imagine a lot of casual gamers would pick it up simply for that. Metro 2033 seems to be one of those games where you either love it or hate it, much like STALKER.

I dont rate crysis as a 90%+ game but its a really decent fps. The graphics do add to this and on high nothing beats hiding in bushes and cornering the enemy troops. I was so excited on metro 2033's release date that i couldnt wait to get back from work and play it. Maybe I am slightly more critical of it because of my disappointment in it but ive bought it twice and tried quite hard to like it. I stopped playing the 2nd time due to shooting an enemy at point blank range straight to the head and they didnt die. This sort of thing annoys me. Im gonna try it again tonight though after reading all the positive words on this thread :p

New Geforce GTX 460 1gb + Purchased Metro 2033 = win for me.

how does the tesselation hold out in this game?

I don't think the Dx11 is really worth it, the tessellation isn't great in Metro it's pretty bad compared to the Heaven benchmark. Bit too much of a performance crippler for little gain.

Would a 5770 run it OK?

Yes assuming you don't want to max everything out / play at very high resolutions. Turn off Tesselation and ADOF and you will fine (neither of which are well implemented (DOF) or that noticable in game (Tessalation).

I enjoyed the demo of this and will definately pick it up at this price (assuming I am not too late of course). Something to let my GTX460 SLI OC earn its keep.

yep kills my card on dx11, Nvidia uses tesselation better though doesnt it?

Looking at the new HD6850 compared to a GTX 460 the 460 gets beaten out quite a bit on Metro 2033 in Dx11 so I guess not, I've not really looked into Dx11 much though so maybe I'm getting it wrong.

Edit: I think the 6850 is supposed to be a direct competitor to the 460, then again the 6870 is only £10 more than the 460 anyway. :/

Yeah i hear raven in the graphics card forum about Nvidia implementing tessellation better than the 5XXX series. I have a 5870 and struggles on metro maxed

ditto, my 5870 struggle with tessellation at 1920 x 1080, in fact at most res, so I turned it off, including DOF. Both these options killed performance, but once they were off, game ran like a dream at 1920 x 1080.

Loved the whole atmosphere the game gave, very creepy and I really should play it again.. Worth owning a PC for, well maybe not but it was a damn good game.

Slightly off-topic, but as the matter of DX-ses has come up here a few times:

I don't know how I can switch between DX versions. Can anyone give me a hint?

thought the option to switch between DX 9 - DX10 or 11 was in the advanced graphics options. Unless your running Windows XP and then the option isn't there or grayed out, I can't remember.

It give you the option in the video setting in metro 2033, or a lot of games that support different versions give you the option before you start the game

oh and a card that supports dx11 and windows 7
