Metro 2033

Why would they include RPG elements? It's an FPS, Stalker didn't have any RPG unless you count chosing a faction which is more of a "In which area do I want to be shot at?" situation.

The best FPS games ever created (like Stalker) are IMO still worse than RPG/FPS hybrids like Deus Ex, Fallout New Vegas and System Shock 1+2, that's why.

RPG elements like freedom of choice, interactive dialogues, increasing character abilities and weapon upgrades etc can make the game better. Metro was great, but if it was more open I would enjoy it a lot more, plus the replayability would be better. Linear games are fine the first time, but second time the fun is pretty much gone for me.

Stalker had some light RPG elements, especially in CoP where you could even decide what happens with many characters..plus the openness of the world, stuff upgrades..it was awesome.

I am so impressed by this game.

Sticking it on the hardest setting is usually a testament to playing a good game for me. I try to do it with all games but some games simply make the enemies harder to kill. In this, the AI is stunning. I love how you can load a checkpoint 20 times and the enemy do something different every time.

The weapons are fantastic and the gun fights feel so real. It really reminds me of Stalker series, even though I never finished playing SOC.

I'm only about half way through but just had to give it a massive recommendation. It's been a long time since I've played a good old FPS made for the PC without crappy console graphics or traces of console tat.

I love this game a lot.

^^Glad you're enjoying it, I found it to be one of the best games I've played this year. Out of interest, what settings and frame rates have you been getting?

I love it.

I have an overclocked 5970 card. The fastest card possible (I believe).

Despite having 3 30" monitors, I actually am running direct x 11, max details, only 1900*1200!!

It's choppy at 2560*1600

Mighty fine game.

I got this game knowing nothing about it, saw some awesome screenshots. When i got it i loved it, for those saying its bland and like other shooters, i think its the opposite, with the idea of putting gas masks on pumping up a torch lol and changing canisters etc also you have to be careful with ammo. And visually this game is amazing, love all the depth of field stuff my 2 6870's handle it pretty good aswell. I was surprised when i saw it was out for x360 aswell because its not another one of those adapted console games :) Well worth the buy (Y)

for some reason it completely failed to grab me, it looks bloody gorgeous, plays great, but it just hasn't gelled with me at all & i really couldn't say why.

I still can't get into this game, I picked it up ages ago and so far played it for two hours and its not my cup of tea. It runs like turd on my PC and it looks nothing special. For a game that is set in closed environments I'd expect a smoother experience and all this fancy lighting isn't worth the crippled performance in my opinion.

I get 30-50 FPS on high DX 10 and no AA but its gets quite choppy with the ever changing frame rate :(

I have been enjoying this game recently on my M11x. Amazingly it runs reasonably well on the M11x's 335mGT GPU (overclocked heavily of course).

I have played around quite a lot with the config files (once I found which of the three needed changing - seriously why bother having 3 if you only need to change two?!)

I havn't got very far into the story (been testing too much) but I am loving the atmosphere at the moment. It reminds me mostly of STALKER with the 2009 complete mod (which I also have).

Got it in the steam sale, looks absolutely brilliant on DX11, runs ok. Quite like the story and concept behind it. However so far its not really felt too much like a game, so far its been more like a movie that occassionally I get to interact with for 5 mins. It could just be because I am in the early stages of the game and maybe it gets less cut-sceney later on. I suspect that ultimately the highly linear nature of it will be a big minus for me compared to the more non-linear nature of Stalker and Fallout 3 etc. Definitely stunning looking in places though.

I was very suprised by this game.

It a good mix of genres. I particulalry like the more action game sequences like the climbed bits, especially at the end, climbing up the tower.

I thought the monster where great the fight, the only thing I thoiugh could have been better was the human confrontations, seemed a bit like stalker which I didnt like too much.

Yes, I know what you mean about the beginning and cut scenes and the like, but it does change as the game progresses and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Just completed this:

Good:
+Looks decent
+Decent atmosphere, feels a bit more 'real' than STALKER
+Sequence when your mouse gets lagged by having a boy riding on you back, pure genius :)
+Decent flow, getting to a settlement gives a nice sense of relief
+Some nice set pieces defending areas with teammates
+Innovative currency system

Bad:
-Performance a bit shaky in places (especially fighting those weird blobs around the reactor), better than I expected though
-Lack of much in the way of decent boss fights
-Difficult to know what the difference between weapons is so I never bothered buying any in shops
-Felt like the 'town' areas could have been expanded on a bit
-Possibly a bit too linear although I'm being a bit harsh probably
-Outdoors areas are generally weak and boring, much preferred the metro setting

Overall I'd say it's a decent game but not quite as good as I'd hoped based on the hype, if you take away the gritty atmosphere it is a pretty basic shooter by modern standards, that doesn't particularly excel in terms of enemies, weapons, combat, story etc and as such I can't see myself ever playing it again.

Pretty much agree with all of that. Would add that many of the level maps are disappointingly small, and the game itself is surprisingly short. I had it finished in 13 hours, and that included playing through Frontline twice to try the stealth way (and that itself required a lot reloading!).

I may load up the odd level again just for the nice graphics and atmosphere, but I can't ever see myself playing through it from scratch a second time.

Currently playing through it for the first time. My biggest gripe is the checkpoint system and no quick save. I like to be stealthy but at the same time try to explore every nook and cranny and you simply can't do this with much enjoyment when you have no clue where the next checkpoint is going to be. You can spend ages exploring a level just to alert some random dude and therefore have to abandon being stealthy and get into a firefight or be forced to reload from the last cp.

Damn this is still on my list of games i have bought in sales but not downloaded. Really want to give this a blast, but I am making a concerted effort to get all my half completed games out of the way before i start a new one. And shift 2 and Shogun 2 are out very soon...
