Great lap from Max.

I reckon without the history, Max would get punished. How was he far away from the racing line?

He was right on the edge of it with a ridiculous closing speed for Bottas. There is no way if you were Bottas you could commit to the racing line, it would be too close.

Stonking lap from Vettel, just as it appeared the track might have lost some of the life. Verstappen's earlier lap certainly wasn't shabby either!

I imagine he'll get away with the investigation. Bottas was unsighted but just made a real hash of it.

Verstappen was blocking the racing line on a section where a driver on a racing lap had no chance to go round him. A penalty would be fair.

I think we'll need to agree to disagree on that one and see what the stewards say. I think Bottas had to adjust but it was marginal (he was focused on Verstappen, not the line) and simply made a mess of it.

I'd agree Bottas made a mess of it and that made things worse, but even if he hadn't, Max's positioning would have impeded his fast run. Drivers who are not racing at full speed must ensure they do not interfere with the laps of drivers on fast laps.

Yeah, I do agree with that - I just think I've seen worse go unpunished, admittedly on faster sections of track.

Verstappen does seem destined to never be far away from a headline though. I think the stewards met them 30 minutes ago, so hopefully a decision soon.

More consistency would be nice. In any case, I don't think it actually affected the final results so I wouldn't be bothered by no penalty.

It does seem that way at the moment.

Official. Max-Bottas
No further action

@andrewbensonf1

No further action on Verstappen/Bottas. Verstappen "did move slowly from racing line but stewards do not consider this as impeding"

As I said earlier in the thread, Bottas had no choice but to take avoiding action because Verstappen was right on the edge of the racing line.

Bottas would literally have had to work out that the closing speed was such (a big one) that he could stay on the racing line and he would just brush past Verstappen's rear right. Instead he took a more exaggerated movement to the right and ended up locking. It is only easy to stay with hindsight that Verstappen was not on the racing line. The risk to Bottas was rear ending Verstappen.

The start will be exciting given the recent history of the front row drivers. I foresee Verstappen taking no liberties, while I'm sure Vettel will be extra cautious.

I'm hoping Hamilton can take the championship with a win but a podium won't be too bad.
