Long story buy basically I'm owed some money (£2500) but the person in question has just offered me their MGF instead. They bought it from a dealership earlier this year for £3500 but have yet to pick it up. It's a 1996, in white with hardtop and 29k on the clock. The HG and cambelt has been done earlier this year at the dealership.

Should I

A) Take the car and sell it? (is it worth £2500 privately?)
B) Take the car, sell the Mondeo and keep the MGF?
C) Just hold out for the money (which might take a while to be honest, it's been 6 years already that I've been owed this money!)

The car is currently located at the dealership in Surrey so I was also thinking of seeing what they'd offer me for it (that way I wouldn't have the hassle of picking the car up and selling it)

What do you guys reckon?

Definitely worth 2.5k.

I'd say it was worth a touch more, maybe 3k if it's a goodun.

If there's a chance he's going to take the pee with getting your money back to you, take the car and sell it on.

I've been waiting that long for the money I've written it off really so part of me thinks that I might just keep the MGF as it's like getting a free car. Shame it wasn't an MX5 really :(

I'd take the MGF, drive it around for a couple of months then sell it when Spring starts to appear.

Good plan. I guess I should cash in the tax and insurance on the Elise and Mondeo if I do that otherwise it's gonna get expensive having so many cars on the go!

If its been 6 years then id take the car, might never see the money otherwise!

Cant say i like them though, horrible cars! :(

Yup, nasty cars - should be nice and easy to sell when the sun comes out again though!

Oh for goodness sake the MGF is a rather good car

Got 4/5 from What Car? and numerous review sites. It was a huge seller

Just because it's not an MX5 doesn't make it crap

I borrowed an MGTF 1.8 130 off a mate for a week, it was crap.

IMO of course.

Oh, and...

i wont say mgf's are crap but as a sports car if aint a patch on an mx5!you sit too high for a start, the hndling imo is a bit iffy and they aint the most reliable cars and aren't as cheap to service as you would think

Personally I would wait for the money, because if you have waited 6 years already, then you can maybe get him to sell the car himself and pay you back.

Just sounds like a lot of hassle getting another car that you dont really need. It could end up being a liability rather than an asset.

Take the Car.
Cash the tax in.

Get it looking excellent/mint, fix any minor niggles for cheap and then sell it in the Spring after a fresh MOT.

That's what I would do.

Is it the VVC version? they seem to be the most desired ones, the 1.8i's dont do so well in reslae, i bought mine private for £1900 inc hard top and boot rack with a recently fitted and low mileage brand new engine (twas a 1998 car) i sold it to a dealer for £1875 in part-ex for my BMW. VVC will fetch £2500 easy if its in good nick with hard top and white is a rare colour for them really, most are BRG (like my old one!).

I'd say take it (if you've wait this long chances are you'll never see the money if you dont take it!), cash tax in as said and tidy it up for the summer, keep it covered during the winter though as youll probably find a leak somewhere! if you need any help with fixing leaks I can probably help with all of them, if not then www.mg-rover.org is a great pace to check out.

Worth zero. My folks have had their MG TF 160 on sale for months and not a single bit of interest at all yet.

Isn't it the wrong time of year to be selling Soft Tops?

To the OP. if you're owed the money and aren't going to get it back i'd take the car. Even if you can't sell it you can use it and at least get your money back.
