MGS5 having only played MGS1?

The main part of MGS is the story, they have easily the best stories in gaming. Its a bonus that the gameplay is good IMO.

Of course, but as blitzwing says, sometimes they can go over the top.

How many of you have played Ground Zero's? Is it litterally 1 mission?

There's one main story mission, then 4 side missions and 2 extra missions (were console specific but not any longer with patch). There's 2 difficulties for each one and various challenges (to get S rank), but they all take place in the same area.

so ALL the mission are unlocked from the get go ? As I recall the reviews saying you had to complete certain things to get them ?

Sounds like the kind of thing that used to be free on a CD attached to the cover of Playstation Magazine... but hey ho, that's just the way games are nowadays.

It really isn't, it's much more than any demo. Ultimately you'll get as much out of it as you want to though.

As for cutscenes, the only time I've had a problem with them in an MGS game was MGS2 because so much of it was done via the Codec screen. The rest at least gave you something to look at, and even MGS4's quite long cutscenes were great to watch and always kept the story moving.

Yeah sounds like being open world means you can replay it totally differently. Plus if I like it I should love TPP.

Need to complete the main story first at least, and I know the extra ops need you to collect stuff in the main story mission. Can't remember what you need to do for the side missions though, sorry.

seriously mate just play the following:
metal gear solid
metal gear solid 2
metal gear solid snake eater
metal gear solid 4
metal gear solid peace walker
metal gear solid Ground zero

Now theres two ways you could buy the legacy edition which contains all of them except Ground Zero. Or you could buy the HD edition and buy metal gear solid and peace walker seperatly on the psn store, then that leaves you with ground zero.
You really do want to play the above to appreciate the story and understand the setting and the characters. They have been through a lot, its an epic story that rivals anything ive seen on tv or read in novels. The soundtracks are amazing and are expertly picked and for each moment in the game.
Us players after playing metal gear solid 1 and 2 had to wait about 9 years I believe to see its conclusion in metal gear solid 4. It was such and emotional journey and experience to see it to the end. And I know ever metal gear solid fan will agree with me. I really hope skeeter that you do play them all, then you will understand.

I'm after if there are any story lines I need to know before playing 5 (like people who watched the Matrix 2 without watching the original and therefore spending the whole film confused to hell), and it doesn't sound like there are.

When TPP comes out yes there likely will be, GZ doesn't have a lot in it and you won't know the characters but the story isn't overly hard to understand at a basic level.

If you want to understand TPP when it comes out, go play the others, if you don't get them, its your loss, likely better than any other game series you've played though

Recently I saw a series of Youtube videos that go through the story from beginning to end, just to remind myself. It's actually a pretty underwhelming story in my opinion, lots of it is just plain weird and the twists in the plot just seem to be there to justify the games.

I used to think the story was great too but watching it all in quick succession left me pretty disappointed the MGS story gets way more credit then it deserves imo. The games are fun though.

It's interesting to me that Metal Gear has so many cut-scenes and is very plot heavy, yet I found the plot in the Souls games to be much deeper and more engrossing...yet that doesn't really tell you any of it. You have to actually find it, read items, look at the environments and use your creativity a bit. It's set up so well.

I still enjoyed the plot of Metal Gear though, although I thought the earlier timeline parts were much more interesting. All this cyber soldier stuff with Raiden couldn't be more dull to me.

I love twists on actual historical events though so MGS3 was the most interesting for me.

Hopefully that means I enjoy TPP quite a bit.

Is there anywhere else selling GZ for anywhere near the £10 it is on PSN? CEX still want £20 for it second hand!

£17 from Asda.

As for Peace Waker, I just couldn't get into it personally. I'm a huge MGS fan but it just didn't grab me, clearly it was designed for a portable style of play rather than long multi-hour sessions, and the whole 'resource management' type thing just got in the way for me. The storyline is pretty simple though so it was easy enough to pick up on what happens and most of it is summarised in Ground Zeroes anyway.

I have watched MGS1 all the way through (played a fair chunk of it too), completed both MGS2 and 3, and I am avoiding all other MGS info until I play 4. It is not as simple as being able to catch up story wise through videos - this is a special series that is worth putting time in to. It isn't Spyro.
