Miami building collapse

A lot of these buildings were built during the drugs boom of the 80's in dodgy ways. Miami has gone a bit downhill since then. I would hazard a guess that maintenance hasn't been kept up.

What I found pretty astounding was how little reaction it seemed to get in the US. Got to about 3rd trending in US twitter yesterday, but nothing today.

Do you think it’s got anything to do with the residents being Latino immigrants? They seem to get a lot less sympathy than others in the US.

Like Grenfell. I sadly noticed a lack of empathy towards them from many brits.

I'd put it down to Americans being so individualistic that they simply don't give a **** about anyone else, particularly people who are probably relatively poor (I'd assumed based on where they were living)

But, yeah, the Latino aspect is probably significant too.

Absolutely horrific. RIP

Almost looks like explosives took out the key loadbearing elements at low level leading to instant, catastrophic collapse. Florida suffers from sinkholes which are often difficult to identify until its too late, one possible explanation perhaps.

I saw this and was also surprised not to see more publicity on it. Looking at it...I just can't imagine how anyone could survive it but one guy has. Maybe he was nearer the top floors and somehow the bedding braced some of the fall. Shocking. I wonder if this will spark safety inspections of many neighbouring buildings of the same age and construction if they do not find a clear cause.

Explosives? So you think this was intentional?

You have to wonder what local government are doing as reports say it was in poor state of repair. Making sure such buildings are safe to live in is a part of what tax payers pay government to do.

I'll be amazed if they find many people alive from the way it collapsed. RIP.

Apparently they were in the middle of the process to re certify it as safe. From what it appears, the re certification is done at 40 years since it was built, then every 10 years after that. Assuming this is the process that was being adhered to https://www.miamibeachfl.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/45-50Yrs-or-Older-Recertification.pdf

Not sure if there are other checks done in the 40 years, fire safety etc. and not sure how it compares to checks in other countries.

In that link there is talk of there being knowledge of subsidence for years.

I guess once the rubble is cleared we'll know if it was a sinkhole.

Its a major concern that there are hundreds of these type and age of apartment blocks/condos up and down this part of the Florida coastline.

Not really surprising to me considering that it's Florida, but even disregarding the corruption aspect... it's not like the coast of Florida is long for this world if hurricane season keeps getting more vicious.

Anyway, I hope there's more survivors than my cynical mind currently fathoms.
