Michael Owen

He's another one that's finished to be honest, must just have something about his physique that isn't up to the strains of modern football.

hes a crock.

was never a Quality striker.

has never even hit 20 league goals, i mean wat the.................****

I don't know if I'd agree with him never being a quality striker.

It's still possible he'll continue his international career, how old is he now, 30?

He was just never the same player after getting that injury, but I still think he's one of England's best strikers and I feel sorry for him not making it to this years world cup tbh.

From the interviews he gave in the summer I think Owen saw United as a stepping stone back in to the England squad rather than a club to win trophies with and now he's definitely not going I wouldn't be surprised if he retired.

If he can get some form going and some games I think he'll still fancy his chances at the 2012 Euros.

32 isn't that old - pace goes but the knack for scoring never does.

Go watch some old videos of Michael Owen on youtube, he was an immense player. Scored amazing goals for Liverpool. Annoys me to see people say he's overrated etc.

He got to his peak pretty early in his career, it's quite unreal how quick he was then just completely lost it. No strength at all but yes he can still finish. Unfortunately so many better strikers out now, some are even ENGLISH!

Read what Feguson has said about Owen "He is a player I should have used more this season"
Really Fergie? Well, theres a thing......

When he had pace he was frightening good. His trouble is strength, he had none and played too much football too young with such a fragile body.

Liverpool relied on him too much when fowler got injured.

Once he lost the pace, defenders got much closer to him no longer fearing getting turned and stipped for pace. Although he didn't have the speed anymore he still could finish.

A shame the injuries took the toll, because without them he would have been englands highest ever goal scorer.

He's scored over 15 Premiership goals in a whopping SIX seasons (out of his first seven), a feat Wayne Rooney has managed a grand total of, er, twice in eight season.

Drogba has managed it twice.
Adebayor has managed it once.
Van Persie has NEVER managed it (never got more than 11 in fact).
Berbatov has NEVER managed it.
Torres has managed it once.
Anelka, to be fair to the lad, has managed it three times, only another 3 times to go to catch Owen.
Keane has managed it once.

So yeah, he's achieved that as many times than Rooney, Berbatov, Drogba, Torres, Van Persie, and Adebayor COMBINED. You will struggle to find many current Premiership strikers who can match him for that stat.

Oh for crying out loud bitter much?

England aside he plays for Manchester United the biggest club in England and one of the biggest in Europe, unless he lost his appetite for the game which judging by every one of his interviews since joining Man Utd is clearly not the case at just 30 years old there is not a chance in hell of him retiring especially when he's playing alongside the likes of Giggs and Scholes who are still performing at the top level and are 3/4 years older than him.

The injury just sucks to be honest, I still think he would have gone to the World Cup regardless of not being in any of Capello's squads thus far simply because as he proved last weekend at Wembley in the games where it really matters he only needs once chance. I could quite easily see Rooney or Berbatov either hitting the keeper or dragging that shot wide last week but not Owen. Had he not got this injury I think he'd of easily got a total of 12-15 goals for us this season which would have been a great result given his lack of starts.

Huh? Pigeon's right. Owen's main concern since leaving Liverpool (it was probably the same even when he was at his prime with us tbh too) has been his England spot, that's the only reason why he agreed to join Newcastle.

I don't think he'll retire now, not while he's still got 1 year left on his contract. Once that runs out I certainly wouldn't be surprised if he does retire; Utd surely won't extend his deal and the only other clubs that were interested in him (Stoke and Hull), I doubt he would even consider joining.

He's more interested in his horses than football now anyway.

Fergies already said he envisions Owen being a United player for years so no I disagree, the two year deal was probably to cover all concerned at the time but once that is up I think he'll move onto a 1 year rolling contract similar to that of Giggs & Scholes etc

I'll be surprised; can't see Utd wasting money on a player that won't play. And with no hope of playing for England (let alone in a major tournement), I can't see Owen settling for the sort of contract/money he's on at Utd now.

Well we haven't wasted money on him thus far so I dont see why that would change all of a sudden next season

Regardless of how many games he has played when you play as many games a season as United do then you need squad players and given his injuries over the last few years but his obvious quality still I think he's the perfect match for us (ie he can be relied upon in big games but is not going to kick up a stink about not playing week in week out)

+1

He can't be relied upon though. His entire career has been interupted by injury and just like I said about Hargreaves in the other thread, things will only get worse.

And if Owen agrees to be a bit part player on rubbish money (by his standards), with no prospect of playing for England then I'll eat my hat.

Without the prospect of playing for England, huge money or regular football at a decent level then I can't see Owen carrying on.
