Why on earth was someone doing 13 life sentences (for robbery) and 13 concurrent five-year sentences (possessing an imitation firearm) ever in an open prison!?

He'd already served his minimum tariff and he was being prepared for release. This is why he was in an open prison. This is standard procedure.
Why does the phrase life sentence not mean anything anymore? :(

I almost threw something at the TV just then watching the news and them interviewing that stupid old bint about sentencing.

It's a good question. My cousin was brutally murdered by her partner in a frenzied knife attack at her home three years ago. The judge gave him a 'life' sentence for it with the caveat that he must serve a minimum of twelve and a half years before being considered for parole. Realistically, he could be out in fifteen years as offenders invariably fail their first parole board. Our family were gutted at the sentence and think that calling it a 'life' sentence is a sick joke. Life should mean life. :(

Life sentence should mean life. 50 years minimum. Getting a 10 year "life" sentence, but getting out in 5 for good behavior is nonsense.

I do agree that the way sentences work is the wrong way around. It should be you serve your given sentence as a minimum, and then only get out then with a good record. With time added on for bad behavior whilst serving your sentence.

Got examples of this happening daily? Seems like a freak occurance to me.

Although heads should roll in terms of accountability for the gross error in judgement.
