Microserver OS

Yeah very handy indeed :)
Out of curiosity what happens when you finish studenting, do you get to keep all the licenses for free or do you have to pay to keep them? I presume there are limits as to how many licenses you are allowed to get under the student scheme?

If you get access to Windows server for free, then well... 2008 R2 / 2012.

Student licenses last 2 years from date of purchase in terms of download availability, but I think the keys keep working, and you get a key for most windows desktop/server os.

You can't continue to get more (uni should terminate your account), but the ones you have will continue to be valid.

"You are limited to ordering 1 of this product"

Although your university could just set you up another account and download another :P The university under this scheme (DreamSpark Premium) pays so much per year and we get access to the likes of W8, W7, and basically every bit of software microsoft sells except some packages in office.

DOS 6.3 Server EDT hosted txt files on port 80 waste of money.

Depends on what you are workin with'.

I have Windows Server 2008 (any reason to > 2012?). I considered a Linux based on. Thinkin of doubling it as xbmc for this tv so I can buy THRUSTMASTER RT500+SEAT then my mum will HAVE to let me have my loft back once done :D

GO die ard setup domains so all comps are locked but can login with thier account then have settings on another machine but Windows 8 sorta does that nicely.

is there any reason to use standard instead of essentials?

Guessing essentials just strips back some of the stuff not required for a home office/small business?

i've got server 2012 Essentials on the microserver at the moment and just about to replace it with server 2008 r2.

I had server 2008 r2 on before and decided to upgrade but i'm having an issue with newsleecher in that it using too much cpu causing the download speed to be effected for some reason.

Never had this issue with 2008 r2

Not sure if it should go here or software

but essentially i'm looking at getting a HP Proliant Microserver and was wondering which OS would be best

I'd want it mainly for
- sharing files across network/media center
- bittorrent downloading
- web server
- and any other servers required like (for sake of example, say ts3, old cod)

would just be upgrading RAM to 8gb and 2x 2TB drives in RAID1 if that makes any difference

Which os would be best for this?

For near on 2 years now I've been using Ubuntu Server with mine; it'll do all the above and more.
