I re-routed the airflow in mine and replaced the fans with talismoon ones.

Ive put a splitter in the duct to have a fan on each heatsink and thats about it, i may put that little fan i had back in because it did seem to do some good!

I was going to get some Talismoon fans from Divineo but there site looks so dodgy and ive heard bad things i never did bother. Dont do ebay either.

Get in, this couldn't of been timed any better!!! I've been planning for the last 2 or 3 weeks to buy an Xbox360 tomorrow (pay day) and then buy the extended warranty the same day. Thanks MS, this will sway those people who are unsure about getting 360's and PS3's on the reliability aspect. (Still have to send off, but good to know all of the consoles get 3 years warranty).

Excellent, always wondering when mine will die. It's a launch one, so I always reckon it will the next time I turn it on. :p

Expanded Xbox 360 Warranty Coverage FAQ

Q: What are you rolling out that is new?
A: While we maintain our one-year console warranty (two years in some countries), Microsoft is extending the terms of its Xbox 360 warranty to three years for certain general hardware failures which are indicated by three flashing red lights on the console. This will apply to new and existing customers and we will retroactively pay back the out-of-warranty repair costs paid by customers for console problems indicated by the three flashing red lights.

Q: How does this warranty differ from your existing warranty?
A: Currently, any Xbox 360 is covered by a one year manufacturer’s warranty (two years in some parts of the world). If the console is out of warranty, there is a charge to have it repaired. It then comes with an additional one year repair warranty. With these changes, there is effectively a three year warranty with no charge for repair for general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights error code which displays on the console.

Q: Is this effective worldwide?
A: Yes, these policies are global. The new policies are now being instituted in our customer service centers around the world, which may take a few days to fully implement.

Q: When does the policy change go into effect?
A: These new policies are now being instituted in our customer service centers around the world, which may take a few days to fully implement. They will apply to new and existing customers. For the latest information, customers should visit Xbox.com.

Q: Is there any health or safety issue at play here?
A: This is in no way related to any sort of product safety issue.

Q: Do I get a refund?
A: Yes, we will reimburse any customer who was out of warranty and paid for repairs due issues indicated by the three flashing red lights error message. Customer should expect to receive a check in 10-12 weeks.

Q: How does this affect my extended warranty bought from my retailer?
A: You’re still covered under your existing warranty for issues outside the scope of this specific three-year warranty.

Q: Have you identified a root cause that can lead to failure?
A: There is not a single issue that we can point to as being a problem. We test the product extensively, including accelerated life testing, but the nature of the console itself is very complex, as it’s a consumer electronic product that contains more than 1,700 different components and 500 million transistors.

There are a variety of scenarios that can cause a general hardware failure. Only the indicator (the three flashing red lights) is always the same.

Q: Who do I contact with further questions?
A: Please contact your local Xbox Customer Service (1-800-4-MY-XBOX in the US and Canada).

:D:D

Don;t forget only 3 red lights people get refunds extra support. If you have dirty disc errors etc then the 1 yr warranty still stands. After reading it all thoroughly I am not as impressed as I was initially but I guess it will still cover most people.

Dunno what this will do to the current 21+ day turn around on fixing consoles though. Surely they are about to receive an absolute deluge of claims, hope they have the extra staff to cope.

(Can't be arsed to check but in the UK if a company cannot provide you with a repair under warranty under 28 days do you get a like for like replacement or something, or does it vary by product/manufacturer?)

MS are not short of money so this is great for the future of the 360.

Indeed, but I guess there goes any chances of the 360 becoming profitable for MS in 2007, which surely reduces the chances of a price cut?

Wow, now the PS3 owners cant flame the 360 now.

They can, the xbox is still breaking! :p

Woo Woo! :p

I heart MS.

Too bad I already opened mine and replaced some washers with spring washers to stop the gpu pressing so hard against the heatsink.

Doesnt address the masses of people who have drive problems though. Its good they have done this but to be honest they have lied about the failure rate for 18 months.

One thing this does do though is shut up the idiots who think failures have just been happening to those that miss use the console.

They shouldve given a full extended warranty for the console regardless.

All I can say is well done MS. It's a shame there are reliability problems but it takes one hell of a company to stand up, admit it and then take over $1,000,000,000 in expenses on the chin. Even those who detest MS have to admit this is admirable stuff.

You'll rarely see a company openly admit to a serious fault in their product though.

I'm as happy as the next man about this, but don;t kid yourself, with America's legal system, it was only a matter of time till a class action lawsuit was dropped on MS and at that point this sum they reckon will fix all the broken out of warranty 360s would have been a drop in the ocean.

Ultimately we gain, but I have no doubt it was done to save MS money in the long run, not to help us.

Microsoft says they'll be taking a "$1.05 billion to $1.15 billion pre-tax charge to earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2007 for anticipated costs under its current and enhanced Xbox 360 policies."

True enough.

I wonder how many heads went on the chopping block now they have had to extend the warranty. Surely some designers lost their jobs over this cost they have absorbed.

Who was the head man in charge of the 360, he should be in Walmart working now.

That may be the case with the US (and probably would be) however, MS have not ignored Europe (and the rest of the world) where you'd have more chance of blue snow than winning against MS in the courts.

Well its saved me £60, and I got my pay slip a day early! :D Happy days, 360 tomorrow morning at 8am.

Again, very few of the returns on here lately have been due to red lights. Eating discs and lock ups are not covered. I would still get the full extended warranty.

I've had one of each as a return.

had to be done as the 360 was going down the road of becoming the joke of all console history for failures and 3RROD syndrome, they had to do something in the end just for good PR, its just a shame still that those of us now without a improved revision of hardware just "have to wait" for their 360's to get the dreaded RROD.

This is good news *but* they need to start replacing all game discs for free that were scratched by the 360.
