Seems it could be so

"Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility. We under promised and over delivered on that. It's a very complicated thing... very complex work. I'm just stunned that we have hundreds of games that are backwards compatible," he said. "more are coming, but at some point, you just go, there's enough, let's move on, or people aren't as worried about a game being backwards compatible - and I like to think we've upheld our end of the bargain in making at least two or maybe three hundred games backwards compat.

Taken from HERE

For me it's no big loss as i still have an Xbox to play older games, not that i really wanted to anyway but for anyone expecting a lot more games to be added to the list.....Doesn't seem good :o

While I can't say I'm surprised, I'm hoping for some more games to be added to the backwards compat list before they're done (namely Mercenaries), as I'd like to get rid of my Xbox at some point and put the proceeds towards a PSP.

That is a bummer. If that's the case, I think I will treat myself to an Xbox 1 now. There are still lots of games that I would like to play on that system.

I think your complaints are gonna mainly come from folk who punted their XBox, expecting to play their old games on the 360....

I know when the idea of this came around i certainly thought that every single game from XBox would work on the 360......As time passed and more was said about it, i knew my old games collection had no chance :D

The bit that is full of crap from that quote is the "under promised and over delivered" line.

Now forgive me if im wrong but im pretty damn sure they said ALL Xbox games would work on 360 in the end now that sounds to me like they've under delivered and over promised!!

I sold me Xbox on the back of this promise leaving me with Shenmue 2, Outrun 2 and Timesplitters 3 with nowt to play them on expecting M$ to get them working on 360....maybe not now :(

I reckon its turned out to be a harder job than they first thought and are gonna give up on it pretty soon.

That's complete BS imo. I bought a 360 partly because I'd never owned an Xbox and wanted to play through the backcatalogue of AAA titles. So they're not going to add any more backwards compatible games? Fine.

Just fix Ninja Gaiden and Fable so you can actually HEAR the game instead of just watching it. Great job overdelivering there guys.

They *never* said all Xbox games would work on the 360. They said they'd make as many as possible available, but were quite honest that with a software emulator having to be written for each game they would never get everything working.

They (MS) have a great product which the public seem to love and they do this - I still think its shooting themselves in the foot a little

Lego Star Wars is the only game I would want added to the list, and I have it on PC anyway.

They have most of the titles people wish to play already there, I have very little interest in most of the older titles, as back then they did not make me get a console, and they still don't make me want the games now.

Well I traded my xbox in for a 360, and I'm still waiting for Chronicles of Riddick to be added to the backwards list. Havent played it in ages :(

Does it matter, you buy a new machine, you just play the new games, wanna play the old ones, either keep your old x box, or pick up a cheap one??

If thats the case can I have my 12gb back Microsoft! Maybe there is a way to delete all the backwards compatibility stuff eventually.

As long as they eventially get Outrun 2 to work, i cant say im too bothered if they stop. To be honest i've not switched my XBox on since i got my 360.

I really wish they'd sort out PGR2 as there's no 4-player option in number 3. C'mon Microsoft, it's popular game and you published it yourself!

From the article in the opening post...
"Backward-compatibility is not the reason people buy a new system," said David Hufford, Microsoft Xbox group product manager. "The perception is that it is significant. We've put all our energy into new titles, but since our consumers have asked for it...we've made it a goal to make all titles backward-compatible." -- C|Net News -- May 16, 2005

"At launch, Xbox 360 will be backward compatible with the top Xbox games," Xbox PR manager Michael Wolf told GamesIndustry.biz today. "Our goal is to have every Xbox game work on Xbox 360. You will NOT need to purchase a new 'version' - your original games will work on Xbox 360." -- GamesIndustry.biz -- May 19, 2005

yea but thats saying its a goal, they havent actuall said they all WILL work, only they want them to, that was Davey's point

well seeing most games don't work via VGA anyway and the only game i do want does work via vga (halo 2), then i'm not that bothered.

I read somewhere that the PS3 will not even have 100% compatability also as they have to use Software emulation

a quick google brings up loads of pages on the subject, yet everyone automatically thinks the ps3 will play the entire ps2/ps1 catalog

There's nothing there to say that every title *would* play on the 360, just that their goal was to make everything backwards compatible. They never flat out promised it though.

Edit: Aimed at DD.
