Microsoft is downloading Windows 10 to your machine 'just in case'

That is fine if you are on Windows 10 in the first place, a presumption if you aren't - but then as I said people who left automatic updates setup in a fashion where this happened can't really have been that bothered in the first place.

Along with forced updates I can potentially see myself moving to something Linux flavoured for my main systems in the long run which isn't something I expected to see myself doing.

I don't like the fact you get nagged to upgrade to Windows 10 from 7, 8 + 8.1. The Windows Upgrade icon is great if you actually want to upgrade, and I have moved to Windows 10 on my main PC. I have a spare PC and an old laptop which are currently still on 7. I have no wish to upgrade them, but to get rid of the nagging I have to uninstall updates, brought down as "Important Updates" by Microsoft.

I don't mind them bringing up a message to all Windows 7/8/8.1 users telling them there is a free upgrade available, but why Microsoft cannot just have an easy way to remove the notification, without the user having to go through hoops to remove it I do not understand.

MS needs a fundamental shake up to get back in touch with their customers.

I fully support this statement for these reasons.

Clumsy move by Microsoft. They should know there are people with small SSDs or slow/capped internet. Just seems like one of those things that had zero thought behind it.

Turn updates off and delete the update! I found it easy with Windirstat if anyone was wanting to remove it. Can't recall where it was though or what it was called.

Excellent move by Microsoft, good initiative I say

I would also accelerate the yanking of support for Win7 to all but enterprise customers to get all the fuddy duddies off an OS of yesteryear, you know the sort, those who still moan about the digital switch over for terrestrial TV :D

Nobody kicked this much fuss up about Windows 7 SP1. That installed automatically, and was a massive download years ago when internet was slower and hard drives were smaller!

Why was that ok?

Who complains about the TV switchover?

It was ok because SP1 was released initially as a separate download and then as an optional update, before being moved into "Important Updates" meaning that a lot of people had already downloaded it at their own pace, before the masses.

Also, a lot of SP1 was a rollup of previous updates, already released by Microsoft, so if you left Automatic updates turned on you did not get such a big download when SP1 did finally get moved into "Important."

Finally, why more people were not annoyed by Windows 7 SP1 was because it was an update to Windows 7, not an upgrade. Ie for 99% of users you see no difference between Windows 7 and SP1 and some programs did not stop working due to compatibility.

That's the difference. Pretty big I would say.

Must be kinda annoying for folks with highly metered internet, I think I went through about 9gb after the first 3gb download failed.
