do I need to install this update ?

I have version 2.0 [I think :p ] I noticed this in the "non critical updates" section of the Microsoft Windows XP and have been left scratching my head wondering if I need it at all ?

Advice........anyone?

As I understand it, .net 3 isn't really .net 3. Its a mish mash of some new stuff along with .net 2 stuff. Mainly for Vista I think.

.net 1.1 and .net 2.0 are the ones to have atm.

Correct. .NET 3.0 is more of an extension to version 2.0.

There is no reason not to have all the .NET Framework packages installed.

TBH there's no reason not to install it, it can have some very fancy stuff with WPF so why not?

WPF - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Presentation_Foundation ? Isn't that for .net 3 programming? The OP just wants to run a .net 2 Paint app.

Are there that many .net 3 apps out then? I've not had anything on my PC that needs .net 3 to run. Paint.Net 3.20 will need .net 3 but that is a while off.

ok, cheers for the replies guys, in a nutshell then; I don't need this but it won't do any harm if I install it ?
Thats my take on what has been posted thus far.

That would be my opinion of this thread. You don't need .net 3 but installing it won't make your PC go KABOOM!

*I accept no responsiblity should this actually happen* ;)
