Microsoft Surface 2

Ordered the day after they were for pre-order, type 2 cover says 21st, still waiting for the dock to appear somewhere...

Does anyone know whether standard MDP-> VGA/HDMI etc cables will work? or do you have to buy Microsoft's adapters? I've read there are issues as the MDP port is at a slight angle.

Just called up John Lewis, Oxford Street and they're taking orders for all variations of the Surface 2/Pro 2 (I'm not sure of the 512GB Version) - You'd be able to pick it up in store on Wednesday after the order.

The 512Gb version would be nice but given its £400 more than the 256, I think I'll pass.
Be interesting how the disk speed has increased going from 128Gb to 256gb though.

I'll do some side by side's with mine and my existing Pro when it turns up.

I think the jump from 256GB -> 512GB isn't worth it, windows will take up 30-60GB and then you'll have all the rest to work with. Buying a 500GB Sata with USB 3.0 Enclosure will be less than £100.

I've only got the 256gb because I want the extra RAM..
I've got a 32Gb mSD card in mine and then a selection of SSD drives in external USB3 caddies..

If MS had released a Surface with a Bay Trail or an i3 cpu
I would have pre ordered already. I don't need i5 power
to read emails and web browse but would prefer to
be able to install my own apps rather than be limited by RT.

I honestly don't understand why they choose not to do this.

Stick a bay trail z3770 cpu in the entry level model, include a touch cover
and sell it for £399 or less and you've got a winner.

The i5 isn't just for reading emails and web browsing, you can install whatever you want, be it Photoshop CS6, Visual Studio or even a Virtual Machine on VirtualBox. You're probably thinking about the Surface 2 with an Nvidia Tegra CPU which you can only use the tiled applications on - I think this meets your price range.

Mine says shipping by the 29th, pretty sure it said 22nd a while back...

As for the Surface having Baytrail, imho thats what they should do, ditch the "RT" ARM side of things and have a decent i5 or possibly i7 (some of the i7 packages have pretty low power, 5th gen would be a go-er I reckon) and then a lower spec Atom based system rather than having WP8, WinRT and Win8, surely woudl work out better for MS as well..
