Microsoft want both Blueray and HD-DVD to fail...

The ones and zeros can do a little dance for me if they want, they still don't come close to the joy of owning a physical item with all the effort gone into the packaging, artwork, et al.

What do you do when your mates come round? Show them you hard drive shelf with its collection of movies?

Some things need to be tangible.

Oh and :p to your sarcastic post! :D

I have no friends. My hard drives have no movies on there. Only "1"s and "0"s :D

(I agree with you, I prefer to buy HD content, Harry Potter boxset on blu-ray will be coming soon. I am very exicted. Apparently it's about some kid that can do some magic, but one of my mate's tells me it's really an encylopedia about black magic. It's all very confusing).

Can someone help clear up the difference between blu ray and hd-dvd and not what the differences are on PS3 and Xbox360.

I was of the understanding that the image quality was the same only difference between being blu ray discs were larger?

Not a trick question genuinely want to know answer :)

You're correct. The only differences are capacity and manufacturing costs pretty much. The level of features and quality of transmission are the same now, except HD-DVD is region free.

This is a nice article:

http://www.engadget.com/2005/09/19/blu-ray-vs-hd-dvd-state-of-the-s-union-s-division/

Too much info to paste here. The only error I spotted (after a quick skim) is that since the article (2 years ago), Paramount are now exclusively HD-DVD.

Covers some of the history and tech stuff as well.

Thanks for clearing that up buddy :)

One more random question if I may:D (don't really want to start a whole new thread) when running my PC to the HDTV using VGA I get shadowing which fades out to the right. It does not appear when using the HDMI cable with the PC tho

Regardless of what studio eleased their films originally I believe they both had contracts that state they pick what format their movies go on and when.

So they are not bound by any studios etc in terrms of HD releases. (I am 100% certain this is the case for Spielberg, and 99% certain for George Lucas).

You are correct on both counts - I think the only films of his that SS doesnt own all the rights too are very early ones (pre Jaws/Close Encounters) and since Star Wars' success GL bought all the rights to THX11B (the only films Im not sure about are the Indy ones - famously both GL and SS IP, not that they would have an arguement)

I have this crazy idea in my head that the Indiana Jones film slated for next Summer, so on home release say next September could be a catalyst for this whole thing and that both those guys will make that their first HD release and in doing so will pick their platform of choice...

Just a hunch/romantic notion..

Sounds feasable - but dont forget that SS will be keeping an eye out on how well Close Encounters sells this Xmas also

also worth pointing out that most people (the ones i know at least) import there hd dvds from other places outside europe as theres a greater choice and the price is a lot more competitive.

im sure this commonly known but just to add it anyway.

Goes the same way for bluray.

50% of my collection is imported from the US, due to earlier releases, cheaper prices, or some things, like the Harry Potter years 1-5 not being available here at all.

V1N.

90% of my huge hd-dvd collection is from stateside, since they come out over there first and are a lot cheaper. I don't shop in Asda, Tesco's, Morrisons so pricewise I've no idea what their pricing is like.
