*** Microsoft Windows 11 Thoughts & Discussion Thread ***

The Start menu is much faster than any search function would ever be.

Also, dropping the number 10 would not mean that 10 was the last version ever. Microsoft is a mess. They can't make a normal, stable and nice OS.

Everyone says it has to be Windows 11.

Dropping the numbers will confuse the clients which version would be the latest.

Windows 10 hasn't even reached a 10.1 version which is just insane.

I haven't used the start menu for years now. I just hit the windows key and fuzzy search for the app I need. Same with Spotlight on the Mac. It just looks like the old Win7 menu when I open it, none of the pointless tiles on the side. Always hated those and all the usless weather & news nonsense.

You'd think by 2021 we'd be on something very futuristic by now. Yet still cycling Windows 95/98 styles with new skins.

If I want to open command propt I just press Windows Key, type CMD and hit enter and its open. Most apps I can type 2 or three letters and it's there in the list to open by hitting enter instantly. That is much much faster than moving the mouse to the start menu then scrolling around for the correct folder & icon or tile.

I have my commonly used game launchers and browsers on my taskbar ready to click though to be fair, but I don't use the start menu at all.

It's a signature of the OS, it's been there for time so they daren't remove it for fear of alienating the common user. Aside from the search function I don't know what would replace it. I'm not even sure what a new version of Windows is supposed to bring. Personally I would love a bloat-free power user centric version but alas we live in a world of data mining where even our white goods are phoning home so that's highly doubtful. I do think Microsoft could do a better job with their default every day apps such as email clients, photo managers etc.

Using the Start Menu, search, full screen menu like 8, etc. is all going to be subjective - either faster or more convenient, etc. for different people depending on usage, approach mentally, etc. etc. which is why focusing it purely on one approach is stupid.

For instance my cousin makes extensive use of search, I can find things just as quickly using the mouse pointer especially on my own OS environments where things are setup how is most useful for me.

MS seems to have lost sight of the fact that the primary objective of an operating system is to enable the end user.

Honestly though I hope they are actually releasing something decent and more importantly doesn't reboot on you if it **** well feels like it.

Though overall I like it Windows 7 feels dated in some areas not to mention lack of support, etc. but I keep having to go back to it for an OS I can rely on for any serious work. Windows 10 is basically a clown car OS.

Nothing better than leaving a process running overnight only to find the machine rebooted for updates overnight.. Happened to me several times

One of the reasons I've been so vocal, for all the good it will do, here and elsewhere. For now those machines are still or back on 7 but that won't last forever.

So MS are teasing the new version as Windows 11.

I thought they said it was Windows 10 for ever.

How else are they going to force everyone to scrap their decade old w7 machine that someone threw a ssd in and stuck w10 on?

Drop support for old cpus, bloat the code a bit, maybe drop support for dx10.. Make it impossible to install without creating a ms account, force all data into the cloud.. Possible subscription only?

Well they've announced support for W10 ends in 2025 so I guess we're going to be charged for this upgrade. W10 or W8 forever was really based on them being able to capitalise on the MS Store, which has been a flop. I wouldn't be surprised if we we're about to get stung for this upgrade. The old cash cow model of charging for a re tarted up OS every few years.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Microsoft App Store is going be made the only way that applications and software can be installed, like Google Play Store. I hope not, but if so I will cling onto 10 for as long as I can - security updates or not.

Microsoft should be concentrating on getting rid of all the pre-installed bloat. Who even uses Candy Crush when they install Windows, let alone play it? And who even wanted that new News and Interests they've enforced on everybody - at least let us uninstall it properly, not disable from the taskbar.

Apparently MS themselves didn't say Windows 10 was the last version. Someone else did and MS didn't correct them. So everyone else assumed this was the last version.

Yep, it was Jerry Nixon who is a Senior Software Developer / Evangelist. He said it at Ignite when the concept of Windows as a service was introduced.

Of course, when they said that, Mac OSX was a thing, with seemingly endless 10.x.x versions. Now we have macOS 11 with location based names...
