Microsoft Windows 8.2 Scheduled For January 2014

It's all relative, Win7 start is crap for touch or phone users, even Linux distros have quite a few different start menus etc,end of the day you will always get somebody moaning about something, either learn to live with it or use something else so it's that simple in my books.

FYI I remember the old days ie the bitching about Win95 when it first came out and the start menu system which Win7 is based on,remember Vista and all the bitching, same UI as Win7,my point being users will always find something to moan about.

Lies! I remote desktop into several of my windows 7 machines from phone or tablet and its fine for touch aslong as you have a half reasonable screen res and physical size.

Again though people use the OS in different ways - something like spoffle said above about opening the start screen and starting typing - great works well for some people but is a complete anathema to the way other people use the OS.

I don't know if there is a predominant style that is most effective for the most number of people but neither style - those that find the start screen, etc. the most effective way to work and those who find the XP/7 style start menu the most effective way to work are a minority.

I still struggle with the people that couldn't work out how to use windows 8 without a start button on screen despite the fact there's been a dedicated "Start Button" right in front of them on every PCs keyboard for the last 18 years. Some people are just too dumb to be allowed to use technology ;) :D

We could argue this all day but I won't because I respect your opinion and I agree with the part about users use OS in different ways, bottom line Win7 is already 4+ years old and every OS including Win8/8.1 comes a time when they are phased out and a new OS is the new king on the block with new features, UI etc...

As to which style is best,I just adapt to the OS in question regardless, been doing it that way since DOS 6.22 which makes it so easy to adapt to changes in the next OS rather then moaning and trying to cling on to the old ways forever.

I'm already looking forward to Win9 and waiting to see those anti-Win9 threads and posts by some users hehe, things don't change for some people.
Bottomline Windows has been damn easy to use for decades for me,can't see that changing unless they decide bring back DOS and add a whole new set of text commands(my memory is not as sharp as it used to be,old age gets to us all) :) .

I'll say still use mouse and keyboard on my PCs so that has not changed for me since I started using Windows many decades ago,I do use touch sometimes but only on my Android phone and tablet.
I'm one of those guys that likes a clean monitor and hates even one micro fingerprint on the screen.

Any who says "use the keyboard and type in the program you want" is basically saying the Win8 GUI has failed.

There are people who like to use a mouse and click on the icons like they have for the last 15 years. If you tell them to use the keyboard and type stuff in, they'll look at you and say "if I wanted the GUI from a AT&T UNIX system circa 1986, I would have got one".

Don't get me wrong, I think WP8 on a smart phone is seriously good, but it just doesn't work on a mouse/keyboard/no-touchscreen interface when mashed up with a more a traditional windows GUI.

It's like putting your dessert on the same plate as your main course, and then being asked to eat it with one chopstick. Or driving your car with a row of buttons instead of a steering wheel. Yeah, you might be able to do it, but it's always going to be worse, and will be rejected by most people.

You've really got to ask yourself why so many geeks who have faithfully upgraded from one Windows to the next have rejected Windows 8. You can't just keep blaming customers, at some point MS has to look at the product and ask itself what it has done wrong and how it can fix it. I'm pretty sure MS are more interested in actually selling products, than just talking about selling products.

Hehe well I know what you are trying to say,as a user myself that started on DOS and had no real PC skills back then and had to learn it all the hard way, memory remapping,IRQs,autoexec.bat files etc (Windows users don't know what they missed lol).

Nowadays they have it so easy it's really a joke.

:)

Not sure why you think every current Windows user hasn't used DOS in the past?

BTW not saying the OS shouldn't redesign itself to embrace alternative or newer/future input devices better - I quite like using the touchscreen on my xperia Z tablet to interface with Windows when doing casual stuff and it definitely could be better. I just feel that the OS should be there to enable users and let them approach things how they want (within reason) rather than force anyone down a specific interface path.

NOPE.

The whole GUI doesn't = start screen. Also, I did the very same thing with Windows 7 as it was quicker and I didn't like going through the small cluttered classic start menu.

The way I see it Win8 is like hybrid MK1,by the time we get to MK6 things should be great for most users.

Win7 was technically MK6(depending which Operating systems you count) of Win95,so give it time as they say.

I remote desktop in to my server PC with my phone (Note 2 5" display @ 1280x720) and both Windows 7 and 8 were/are fine for touch use.

As for the opening the start menu and typing, that was in response to people complaining that it takes too long to find stuff, my point was that if speed is your priority then you should be pressing the start button and typing, exactly the same way it was with Windows 7.

Personally if speed is your priority then some users should stop being lazy and customise Windows to their needs, all the programs ,things I need I've shortcuts or within two mouse clicks max.

I've been doing it this way for ages probably since Win95 so nothing new to Win8.

Btw I don't use keyboard or type commands(yes I do know some however) , good old mouse and keyboard working great for me on Win8/8.1.

I actually would like to see a whole new OS with complete new UI for Win9,something new for me to play with and a long queue of moaners making pointless posts because they can't handle this or that ;) .

Stop inciting riots in the streets!
