Microstorage 256gb ssd?

TBH, looking at the quoted specs (Read speed: 157 MB/s,Write speed:98 MB/s) it doesn't seem too great for an SSD -especially such a large one. Also, there is no mention of the controller it uses (which is usually a bad sign - often meaning it is a poor performing one) and the warranty is only 2 years (most SSDs have warrantys 3-5 years long).

Also, when looking on the famous auction site, the £200 listing is from someone with only 3 feedback - hence I wouldn't trust sending £200 to them. Plus you wouldn't get any warranty if you buy it this way.

If you really want a cheap, large SSD then I would have a look at the OCZ Vertex 2 240GB or possible the OCZ Petrol.

Damn!!!
Just won an m17 r3 off him tonight and as he selling these ssd I can only assume its what hes put in the M17 R3.
As he's only got 3 feedback Im gonna insist on picking up as only 30miles away from me, so £12 fuel is better then £50 he wants for postage/delivery.

I cant understand why these are so pricey as like you say the speeds are terrible.

Think I will get a 60gb ssd for windows and a 1-2tb 7200rpm for storage.

Yea, makes sense paying cash on collection for a user with so little feedback (make sure you inspect/test the laptop yourself before paying).

As for the SSDs, even if you buy them from him in person they still are a bad deal - since they are so slow relative to even last-generation SSDs and you won't get any warranty.

A 60GB SSD + 1/2TB HDD is a good plan, though you may want to consider going for a 128GB SSD as they tend to be cheaper per GB, a bit faster within the same family and gives you a lot more space to put your applications and games on. If you are looking for a 64/128GB SSD recommendation, I would go for a Crucial M4, they are fast, decent value and reliable.

Thanks for the info buddy, will checkout crucial, dont wanna go near OCZ after the random switch off/blue screens Ive had with the 2 60gb ocz 60gb in my desktop.

Now,
Have you or any other member got any idea on how to tell the difference between a
M17 R1, R2 or R3 as all look the same to me externally.

EDIT,
Just found a pic that shows there should be a service tag which will have r1,r2 or r3 on the back of the laptop.

Yea, Crucial tend to be more reliable than OCZ. I reckon its because the type of controller they use and they get to cherry pick the NAND (since they owned by Micron, who make a lot of NAND for many of the SSD makers).

As for the M17 differences, I believe they are:

R1 - Core 2 CPU, HD 3800 series graphics
R2 - Core i7 1st generation CPU (nahalem), HD 4800/5800 series graphics
R3 - Core i7 2nd generation CPU (sandy bridge), HD 6870M, 6990M or GTX 560M graphics

well,
Based on the spec he qouted,
2720 and 1x 6990m then deffinately gonna be a R3, lets hope I havent made an £1160 mistake buying this without any warrenty. I only bid that much as a mistakenly assumed the ssd's were gonna be a good make.

As you say, they do look very similar on the outside. I would suggest testing the computer with CPU-Z and GPU-Z (maybe loaded onto a USB stick) before you hand over the money - just to check everything is in order.

Well,
Looking more like a scam artist, I asked for a contact no and here is the response I just received,

" hi,sorry i dont give out number,my item is real and working. thanks
i give you my word "

Bad english indeed.

Like I said, no pickup no sale. Unfortunately IF the seller is a scammer it wont stop them relisting and ripping off another buyer.

Here is his second response,
" i can only accept payment on ebay,i dont want to break ebay rules sorry, once you make your payment,i will send your item out asap by monday morning, its will be next day delievery .
thanks. "

Nice mispelling mr sule dende

All together now, shout out loud............

ITS A SCAM

Interesting?
( I said no pickup = no sale )
His response,
" hi,i do understand your point, the reason why i cant meet up is that am not in the country at the moment,i will try and get in touch with my friend if he can meet up with you next week,
am in spain. but the laptop is with my friend,i will get in touch with him asap,so sometime next week he will meet you......but remember the laptop was rebuild and its doesnt have its original package and also no insurance. thanks "

I will sit and wait

Sounds like a bad deal anyway.... Warranty was invented by the gods for the gods. And contrary to popular believe it wasn't fire promethius stole from mt Olympia it was warranties!

Iv replaced SSDs and GPUs and a CPU under warranty. CPU i got back within a week. SSD im due back on monday (m225, upgraded to M4 as they dont make the 225 now) and the GPU was a GTX280 which i got replaced with a 285.

You want warranty etc. Its madness not to have it.

Yer,
Maybe for the better, would have been more upset if the ssd were actually a good make/model and speed.

After he offered chance to pickup from a freind, at which time I was talking to ebay, who sent him a non performing seller notice, he then sent me a message moaning about the ebay message and even before I had chance to reply he also sent this cancellation notice through ebay,

" pcdoctor1 recently opened a case to cancel a transaction for an item you recently purchased: ALIENWARE M17X R3 2 SSD 256GB.

Reason for request to cancel the transaction: The seller says that both of you disagreed over the terms of the transaction "(Not true, but will cancel now followed with neg feedback)

Then sent me message saying hes sorry but not selling now. What an idiot.

Good to hear you sorted it out - sounds like you dodged a bullet there.

If you have ~£1100 for a gaming laptop I would strongly suggest looking for a brand new one from a decent manufacturer with some nice long warranty. These high-end laptops do have a habit of breaking (as you are running some high power kit in a tiny chassis) so a warranty is very good to have and these days with £1100 you can buy a very nice gaming laptop (maybe not with a HD 6990M, but with a decent mobile GPU and CPU).

Yer,
My limit is £1200 and would like to get new but would hope to get a few month old one with bit warrenty left so get more for my £1200
If can get a 1920x 1080 screen 17 inch with either a gtx560m or 6990m would be nice and an ssd and second 7200rpm hd for storage then would be fantastic, if a miracle :)

OK, but bear in mind that warranty is usually only valid for the person who buys the item from the shop, anyone that person sells the item to is not usually covered by the warranty. Therefore, the 2nd buyer will need the co-operation of the 1st buyer to make use of the warranty.

If you don't mind a 15.6in screen, the MSI GT680 looks like a good match, i7 sandy bridge quad core, GTX 460M graphics, 120GB SSD + 500GB HDD, 6GB RAM, 1080p screen (if you look here, the GTX 460M is basically just a GTX 560M with slightly lower clockspeeds).

Well,
Didnt know that, seems a lot of sellers staing things like 7 months warrety left, so wrongly suggesting the new owner can collect on the warrenty at a later date if an issues arise with the laptop.

It does depend on the manufacturer, so it's worth researching this before bidding - for example Dell do allow warranty transfers, but other laptop manufacturers like MSI don't.

Also, even if the manufacturer doesn't support warranties for non-original purchasers then the seller may intend to process any warranty claims for you - so the listing claim isn't necessarily misleading (though it is a lot more hassle/open to abuse than getting a laptop with warranty where you deal directly with the manufacturer).

dont matter, after readings all the bsod and many other issues with the gt780dx's and the apparent bad customer service record of msi on the msi forum, I aint gonna be buying one of them thats for sure..
