I can't find any information on the net about this, so perhaps somebody here might know something...

I have a "midline hernia", which the NHS has refused to fix (no funds), but I am interested in strengthening up my stomach muscles, etc by using a rowing machine and I'm wondering if doing so would have a good chance to aggravate my midline hernia?

I had a hernia and it's not something you want to make worse.

I'd contact your local GP, as no medical advice on forums.

I thought hernias were considered quite serious?
Surprised you were refused treatment.

Erm, if your local NHS has been fobbing you off about fixing a hernia then you need to be getting on to your local GP to get a fire under their arses.

Failing that, go private.

It's not something you want to aggravate, and just about any type of compound exercise is going to do so.

I'd be back to my doctor and refusing to leave until they dealt with it or called the police to remove me.

Midline hernia or perhaps better known as "hiatus hernia" (lower chest area) and I am not looking for medical advice, just wanted to know if anybody else has used a rowing machine while having a hiatus hernia; (I have had it for several years, so I know all about the problem).

TY

You don't want to be on a rowing machine with that kind of active hernia.

Similarly, you don't want to walking around with an active hernia. It should be rectified by the NHS!

I have a hiatus hernia and use my rowing machine all the time. I also scuba dive as it causes me no problems. But i got cleared by the doctor first as everyone's hernia and body will react differently.

Get on to your GP, turn around for hernia repair is pretty quick, recovery.... not so much. Do not aggravate it and insist it is becoming an obstacle in every day life.

I suffered an inguinal hernia.

Inguinal hernia is very different to what the OP suggests. There is a lot of incorrect information in this thread.

Not sure if the OP is confused - hiatus hernia isn't visible, it's abdominal contents bulging through into the chest via the diaphragm. A bulge in upper abdomen in the midline is diverification of the recti abdominis, not a hiatus hernia.

None of this is medical advice, just anatomy.

Firstly you should see your GP. Have you been told its a hiatus hernia? Did you have an endoscopy to show this? A midline hernia could well be a very different type of hernia and some of these DO need surgery, but if its a hiatus hernia I wouldn't be too worried if you don't have symptoms

You need to go and see your GP for more information. First off, a "midline-hernia" and a "hiatus-hernia" are two completely different things. You need to know what you actually have.

A hiatal hernia involves the diaphragm and the upper stomach. A midline hernia is in the abdominal muscle wall.

Have a chat with your GP.
