Midweek Football 21/22 /10/2008 **Spoilers**

This is champions league thread!

havnt you heard ? he said they were champions league.... end of tbh

so Leicester, United final ?

anyway rooney, cant explain, glad he's back like this, and hes only gonna get better :) and united had some nice slick play today, good to see

Rooney is going to get the most unfairly disallowed goals tally this season, thats three already

Evans was great, GN was ok but not brilliant, OShea and Fletcher didnt really impress me that much, Berba really worked hard whether his goals where offside or not, Ronaldo looked good but also pretty bored most of the time, Nani is slowly improving, but was wasteful at times

I'm wondering how long Tevez is going to stick around on the subs bench. I'm betting not long before we hear more rumours of him looking elsewhere.

No one can keep three £30mil strikers happy.

Celtic were rubbish and to know that they are out of the CL already wouldn't raise any of their players spirits for the remainder of their CL campaign.

United on force but then again it was only Celtic.

Song is woeful, i know he scored but the freekick he gave away leading to the first goal was ridiculous. He didn't even seem to notice the player had knocked it 25 yards away and had no chance of catching the ball before it went out, still gave the foul. The 2nd goal, going for a header you can only get by jumping backwards with zero control over where it will go is just the wrong choice every time, he fluffed several clearances and is just not a defender at all.

Adebayor got nothing right after his goal and Theo was again sporadically good and sporadically useless. Ramsey looked class when coming on yet again, and Vela instantly looked dangerous when he came on. Eboue had a good game and once was pushed forwards was brilliant in the final 5 minutes. The team looks so completely different with Adebayor off and 1 or 2 strikers willing to make ONSIDE runs around the defenders, Fabregas, Ramsey, Eboue, Nasri and even Denilson looked instantly better the second Adebayor was off. Saying that Denilson had been cack for the rest of the game missing most of his tackles and mostly just fouling, rarely in the right position and again is a woeful defensive mid.

Diaby was fantastic though in long spells after the first 30mins clearly showed his lack of match fitness. in the interview with Wenger afterwards Wenger again said that Diaby can play ANY ATTACKING POSITION in midfield or upfront. He wasn't great defensively, is not in any way a defensive midfielder and isn't the option to partner Cesc, neither is Ramsey. Frankly Ramsey looks more direct, stronger and more consistant than Theo and really plays well on the wing, in the Cesc role and maybe as a withdrawn striker, but again is not in any way a suitable partner for Cesc in midfield. We've got so many attacking midfielders, and no one really for defensive midfield. The only option we really have is Eboue and we aren't using it, though with no defensive cover right now that option is gone.

You have to remember we only had something like 6 shots to their 12 about 65mins into the game and not many shots after that, they had another 6-8 after that. They had 4-5 1 on 1's with the keeper. Had Almunia not been so incredibly immense in goal tonight we would have drawn or lost that game. Song has no business being at Arsenal, he was consistantly dropping deeper than Silvestre and playing people onside when he shouldn't be.

Song gave the free kick away becasue Eboue failed to get the ball and so was out of position. It was actually the right thing to do imo as well. I don't see your point about the second goal either? Had he not headed the ball it would still gone to the striker.

Oh and they only had 12 shots by the end of the game...

I actually rate song as a defender when he isn't playing alongside someone like Silvestre. Who whilst he may be good on his day, isn't even close to match fit at the moment surely. Give the guy a chance too, he's only bloody young.

How Leeds only beat Orient by 1 goal tonight I don't know. Missed penalty, 3 or 4 shots off the woodwork... they were appalling.

Eboue failed to get the ball so Song had to foul a guy who would never in a million years get to the ball, with Clichy and Silvestre easily making it back in time considering the ball had gone far out to the wing in the miraculous situation that he got to the ball. Completely and utterly wrong decision, but you hate Eboue so you probably should have a go at him, stupid Eboue without 2 ft longer legs, he really should have reached it.

The second one he changed the direction of the ball meaning no one else could react to it. Had it continued there was a chance Almunia might have gotten to it or the striker might not have gotten it. You can not head a ball when you're off balance, stretching and ONLY have a chance to head it towards the goal, he could have scored directly, or whatever else. When you can't do anything useful do nothing is the general rule of defending. Alumnia was left stranded because he was reacting to where the ball was going initially, after the touch he had no chance. As it turned out the touch from song was perfect for the defender, without the touch it was probably bouncing behind him, in no way should he have done it. He had also for the umpteenth time been caught flat footed with no chance to get to the striker, something he did all night long.

He's not good ever, he's never put in a good performance in defence, except maybe in the african nations cup and so what, Rigobert Song didn't look to bad in the African nations cup either.

He is young, but time doesn't turn a woeful defender into a good one, it can simply make a semi decent to good defender a great one.

I also don't think those stats seem that accurate because the 12/6 shot stat came up sometime after the song goal and not to long after it either. though in reality they had several one on one situations after that but hadn't necessarily had the shot as Almunia smoothered several and came out and intercepted a couple. had the simply scored all the one on one's they had they would have won to be honest, which says something woeful about our defence and their completely inability to deal with throughballs. Song has zero pace, he has no business at the club in any position.

There are several reasons why Celtic may still treat the game in a few weeks very competitively - not least because they still have a chance at a UEFA cup spot (better than nothing from their point of view)

(Im sure GC already knew that it would be tough to qualify when he saw the group - Villareal arent exactly an easy proposition, as well as the Euro Champions)
