Millionaires begging for money

Go fund me is one of those platforms that makes me lose just a little more faith in humanity.

Dealing with two claims at the hospital where families have setup Go Fund Me pages.
There is a lot of money in both of them, above 25K but this money isn't needed for either patient because all their treatment is being done by the NHS.
I can't go into specifics but the families/patients really don't need this money for the problems and I just feel people who have donated have been ripped off.

There's one currently making the rounds on my local FB groups for some guys stuff to be replaced after a dodgy power bank set his bedroom on fire... Should probably have spent £50 on contents insurance

I thought you'd come into money when you made that thread about the treadmill ;)

Well he might have insurance, but if they can make a couple of grand off gullible fools too I'm sure he won't say no.

Yeah this doesn't seem all that bad to me, he's asking for donations to charity, not to his rich mates.
It may well be for a good cause but he's worth an estimated $600m, it's always a bit distasteful when someone that wealthy asks poor people to donate. He should put his money where his mouth is and donate 99% of his wealth first.

Odd take. You have more money than me so you go first

I've had a few YouTube channels pop up in my recommendations who've been affected by the fire - quite a few big streamers live there, some of them have been getting absolutely insane amount of donations on videos and streams - one who has lost their house and office I popped on their stream for just a couple of minutes and they probably cleared 10 grand (USD) in that time in superchat donations.

I would understand if they don't have insurance, which would be their fault! But assuming that they do, then it is a way to profit on their own tragedy because they will be compensated by the insurance company down the line. That doesn't feel right to me, using their own misfortune as content.

No one can do anything about their family photos of irreplaceable personal possessions no matter how much money people donate.

Well they'll grift anything for money. This is just a business opportunity for them.

Yeah, I share the view re: people leveraging it for their using to boost twitch or whatever donations (in reality their regular income).

I'm not sure how much it is their fault re: insurance though, one of the biggest insurers (State Farms) pulled out of the area leaving over a thousand homes with canceled policies (there are circa 9,000 homes in Pacific Palisades) and the last resort insurance fund operated by the state was massively underfunded - IIRC something like 6 billion in liabilities for this from a fund of like 200 million.

So it's not necessarily their fault if they didn't have insurance, they might well have had a policy canceled and simply couldn't find any more cover - that's more to do with local government imposing price caps on the insurance companies operating there and leading some to just pull out of that market entirely.

No one in LA is insured for the fires, insurance companies pulled out 6 months ago over this scenario.

But yeah still doesn't excuse already millionaires begging for money, bad taste.

Losing irreplaceable items of great emotional meaning is hard whoever you are though.

I dunno the whole situation but one of the channels I semi-regularly watch in their video mentioned the insurance situation wasn't straight forward, due to the fire coverage situation, and it would be a long time before they got paid if at all with the state of things.

If he donated 99% of his wealth he and his kids would still be set for life. It's odd to me that someone would be hoarding so much money that they didn't need and begging others to give money instead.

He has a platform and he is issuing a call to action. People may not have considered giving and now they will ?

I'm all for villifying the rich but I'll stick to actual criminal rich I think

If people genuinely need help then of course I'm willing to donate. But we are talking about the richest nation on earth. I'm sure they can help their own countrymen.

It maybe the richest country on Earth, but it also has the largest wealth inequality - the overwhelming vast enormous majority of people live in poverty there, 99% are one accident away from being homeless - given the total lies of their healthcare system artificially increasing prices to impossible levels to force insurance on people.

As for those in the affected areas of LA - while some 'wealthy' they are billions of times closer to being homeless than a true billionaire.

The top 1% of America own the majority of Americas wealth, think about that for a moment, it's disgusting.

In conclusion, due to the selfish nature of their culture after decades of moulding its people for profit, those with the money to help dont care, and wont donate much of any significant sums.

I stumbled across this article about Simon Cowell begging people to raise funds for his celebrity friends who have lost their houses due to the LA fires.

He's literally begging the public, who are undoubtably poorer than him or any of his celebrity mates.

The lack of self awareness is astounding. But he's not alone in a trend that started a long time ago.

I don't think you read the story and have instead added what you wanted to be outraged by.
