I've had minecraft installed on my PC for ages for my kids to play. I did try to give it a go but got fed up constantly having to check websites to see how to build things / know what to do. Recently i watched a few videos with my kids about some custom maps (Isles of Junara was on i think). It got my interest up quite a bit. I presume there are loads more like this? Where is a good source for them?

Are there any must have mods to install before i get playing? Something like an in game crafting guide would be priceless for me as would anything else that helps new players.

ive also just started playing this and would be intrested if anyone knows any good mod's/character skins, sites with tips and so on.
any help would be much appreciated.

Linktart is an amazing server and the guys will look after you. The modding scene has moved to that of 'packs of mods' at the moment. The top two being Feed the Beast and Technice pack. These will take away any installation problems etc as they do them all for you. Only thing with them is, there are multiple mods on each pack which you may find overwhelming at first.

2 ways to overcome this is to watch a youtube Lets play. Direwolf20 is the best for this in my opinion and will get you up to speed quickly. There is also a guy froms Yogscast called Duncun who also does a good Tutorial/Lets play series, this one is quite basic though and you may grow out of it very quickly.

As for ingame crafting guides.. NEI is what you need. You can put it in a recipe mode and it has a list that opens when you open your inventory, You can then click on each item and see the recipe (sp) for it. (this is nearly always included in the mod packs from the above)

Hope this helps :)

If you are interested in mods first thing you want to do is pop over to FTB http://feed-the-beast.com/ download the launcher. This has a load of mod packs to chose from already setup for use.

Also with regards to youtube Direwolf is one of the best youtubers for mods.

I would recommend staying away from the Technice pack for multiple reasons.
1.It is very buggy compared to FTB.
2.FTB is created by the modders themselves this means that mods will work a hell of lot better together.
3.Technice pack don't have permission to use a few of the mods in the pack breaking copy write and is disrespectful.
4. You will get a lot more support if problems arrive from the FTB forum than you will on the Technice pack forums.

Just checked out those mod packs and they do seem to be a little overkill to start off with. Rei's mini map and the NEI recipe guide things look handy though.

but they do mean you dont have to mess with the install. you can disable the ones you don't need, but tbh you can still play vanilla minecraft with them all active and it makes little difference until you choose to start using them.

i liked the Yogscast series, entertaining and there are some good ideas in there, they can just take a while to get to!

Mods that we use on our server at work.

- MultiMC
- Minecraft Coder Pack
- Minecraft Forge Mod Loader
- Minecraft Forge
- Not Enough Items
- mod_ReiMiniMap

Plus loads of little mods. Enders, Twilight Forest, IndustrialCraft, ...

But mostly chicken mods (we love chicken).

Sorry to be pedantic, but that isn't how copyright works. You can't copyright mods. Pretty sure they got permission for all of that stuff anyway, but I don't claim to be an expert.

Anyway, if you are looking for a mod pack, I'd recommend Technic pack just because I'm pretty sure you can find resources that teach you how to play it.

If you want to just play the vanilla game, just install Rei's Minimap and NEI and get started. You can find them separately from the mod packs.

I decided to avoid all mods for now until i know the game better. Have started Sky Survival - The islands of Junara 2.0 and am really enjoying it. Much prefer it when i have an objective of sorts.

You may wana take a look at this thread http://forum.industrial-craft.net/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=3466 it clears a lot of it up. I can 100% guarantee they don't have permission to use IC2, RP2, Forestry and thaumcraft not sure if even has forestry in anymore as the creator of the mod did put a block in it at some point preventing it working with Tekkit.

Reading the original OP post - for crafting items I'm sure Too Many Items allows for a recipe mode which tells you have to craft items by clicking on them and flicking through the required items.

Once you get to grips of the game it's simple! Been out of the loop of MC for a little while being busy with work. Servers are the fun part! Especially with server mods!

Just stumbled across some info regarding minecraft hunger games mode, sounds like my cup of tea. Can anyone recommend some servers?

What would be the best way to get to some land that's a long way away and down quite a bit with nothing but air inbetween?

I've been doing a crouch walk backwards to make sure i don't fall off while making a platform out but have resorted to tipping a bucket of water i can swim down and back up again. Is there a more elegant way?

you could make a hellivator for getting down. and ladder for getting up.
