Minecraft (online Lego essentially)

If your looking at renting a dedicated server - I highly reccomend rapidswitch... even one of their VPS might surfice for this purpose.

Tho I had problems getting the server running under debian - it might work better on another distro.

Which version of debian/java?

lol - just had an 'oh ****' moment...

Was removing some landscape, and then the whole floor dissapeared from beneath my feet... for a moment I thought I'd broke our wookie...

Debian 4.0 (etch) running 2.6.xx with sun java 5 (1.5).

I think some of the dependancies are broken tho which doesn't help... I so hate java.

Good little game. I got stuck in some under water cavarn and couldn't get out :( Cool Project. I reckon with a bit of development and structure we could have a proper city :)

I was talking to a clocker with a dedi last night, we discussed renting some space on his box. I've just realised that when Minecraft comes out of beta (who knows when) it will no longer be free. The player numbers may crash when that happens, so I just need the server somewhere a little more stable untill I find out when a. When it will come out of Beta b. How many people will stay.

Whats the bandwidth usage like? i have a couple of servers that are lacking use at the moment.
Tiny. I have a 20kb/s upload cap (that's what is killing me), I can host the server fine, but when people join they have to download the map to it's current state. The map is only 200kb, but on my connection that is 10 seconds of maxing my upload, which is an issue especially if more than one person connects. Sometimes the knock on effect of someone joining means someone else loses packets and disconnects because I am maxing my connection, which means multiple people are trying to reconnect all the time.
System resources are also minuscule.

For the last few days I have hardly been able to use my Internet, being responsible for a virtual world is stressful stuff!

I think I might have a go at this after work today! Does everybody have their own bit of land or is it just a case of finding an open field?

It's just finding some space. It looks a complete organised mess in there at the moment and it's getting tricky to find any significant space :p

I think a server reset to a bigger size map would be good :)

Bigger map would be good. Is there any way of password protecting it? Each time I've gone in after work loads of my stuff has been ****** up. Won't be playing on that map anymore - as pointless (though extremely fun/addictive) as the game is, it's even more pointless if every time you return to it hours of your work have been ruined. :(

Updated to java 6 and the server seems to work ok on that - so if you can't get hosting I might give it a whirl...

If Rroff is willing to do it for free I recommend that route over using my dedi and paying cash - Don't feel any obligation to me just because you approached me about it yesterday or anything :)

Yeah I wouldn't say it was worth spending money on - anyone with a decent broadband line could easily host this. Very good of you to offer though :)

I've got 1.6MB/s upload, if nobody can top that, I'll happily host it.

The server is private, that's as good as you get. Means you can only get in through the link on the forum.

I'm just throwing the option out there to take the strain off Lyon - but I'd be happier if someone else was hosting - but I don't mind doing it either :P

Box I would host it on has multiple Xeon X5450 @ 3.00GHz CPUs and uncontended 100Mbit connectivity.
