Minecraft (online Lego essentially)

Stay away from tekkit the people who create it are nothing but a bunch of ******* if you want chunks to load just get one the mods that support it.

I would advise railcraft.

Sounds like they might be going out of active chunks, at which point they stop as nobody is there to keep them active. Mods like Tekkit have methods of keeping them active, increases server load but it's your server :P

Not to be pedantic but tekkit is not a mod. It's a mod pack. Railcraft is the mod that makes chunk loading possible.

I love this forum at times, at others I just wonder why some people have to be ^%$£

That's cool man, at least you're only halfmad. As I say I wasn't trying to be a jerk, simply pointing out that the guy who made the mod (it's a pretty sweet mod) and those that ported it to bukki are losing out on kudos and credit due to tekkit (which is basically a laggy launcher).

Not had a problem with it myself but it does seem like a pointless addition and causing a lot of bother for other normal regulars on the OCUK server :(

Just glad we're likely to move away from the launcher soon ! :D

The thing is, I didn't (I knew someone would suggest this :p)

I've just rechecked and its definitely not there.

Given the very limited information you have given, not removing the meta-inf causes the same symptom as you described so this is the only suggestion I could offer. Now if you were to tell us which minecraft version, which build of forge and which java version we might be able to help you further.

railcraft mod adds world anchors which keep the chun kthey occupy always laoded, they can also be put i na minecart, so a trai nwith one i nwill work always

Didn't mean to cause offence. I'm running version 1.3.1 of minecraft. I'm trying to install version 3.4.9.171 of forge(which i assume is the latest). My Java version is 7.00.147.

I assume im 'installing' the files correctly. I'm opening the minecraft.jar in appdata with winrar, adding all the files from the forge client download to the archive and deleting the meta inf folder. I've copied my original minecraft.jar over and tried again and i'm still getting the same problem.

That's why. Forge is not ready for 1.3.1, neither is Railcraft. Download my client in the second or third last page of the unofficial server thread. It contains a lot of mods, one of them Railcraft, make sure it's 125b.7z

My apologies, I was quite tired at the time of posting and should have been more polite :)

Lolism has already replied but I'd thought I'd add a bit more info, the author of Forge hasn't done a build for v1.3.1 of minecraft but has done his final commit for 1.2.5 so I expect him to be starting work on 1.3.1 very soon, Railcraft is dependant on Forge so that has to wait anyhow.
If you do what you have already done, but with a 1.2.5 minecraft.jar you should have no problems. Personally I'd avoid the client mentioned by lolism, while it is well built there is a huge number of mods in it and it would only serve to complicate matters for what you want.
Here is a couple of links that you probably already have but others might find useful:

Minecraft Forge: http://minecraftforge.net/forum/

Railcraft Wiki: http://railcraft.wikispaces.com/

Latest Java: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Cheers for the advice, I will be installing railcraft and forge but it seems like I will have to wait until they are brought in line with 1.3.1. I have someone else playing on my server now and I don't want to mess them about by installing different versions of things.

you should really learn red power and stop using bc stuff

or even better learn about logistics pipes, which are even better than redpower (and apparently someone has ported the mod to SMP). combined with BC 3.0 logic gates they are about a billion times better than redpower tubes

Reeve, have you considered using MultiMC? it makes installing mods and keeping multiple instances of minecraft about a billion times easier. i know thats not your problem but it might help in the future :)

I haven't but then I didn't know about it, or any other mod until a few days ago :p . To be honest, I only want to install the bare minimum to fix the issues i'm having with the minecarts then I will probably call it a day. Cheers for the heads up though, I might use it in the future if I get bored and go mod crazy.

I had a blast on this tonight, playing with 2 others on my server, going to see if I can get some more locals on.

direwolf has done a great spotlight for MultiMC. it makes mod installation so easy that even i can do it (with a few questions asked to the forum)

if you're feeling adventurous you can follow his guide on the forum with the help of his video guide to get the same mods he is using in his letsplay (~40 in total for a pack like technic but better). make sure to check the mod updates section because there's been a lot

i also added Rei's minimap, the secret room mod, the trains and zeppelins mod, balkon's weapon mod, nether ores and better dungeons to his already quite large modpack with just a few config file changes

the minimap from Rei's minimap doesnt play well with the portalgun mod but all i wanted were the waypoints and they were fine. also, better dungeons caused some texture bugs and needed big changes in the config file to balance it out (i made all the dungeons ~10x rarer to balance out the stupidly good loot and removed the volcanoes altogether because it caused some graphical bugs on the horizon
