Minimalism in your life

I've read through their blog, their "21 day journey into minimalism" and as I was reading I agreed with some stuff, for example:

*Getting rid of clutter, such as devices or gadgets you don't really use - I have old PS2 with some old games that just takes space and could really do with selling, air rifle that I never use, some PC hardware, spare laptops and lots of other bits
*Unsubscribe to services, which cost money every month that you can probably get rid off, like insurance for every A/V device or kitchen appliances, or cable if you have decent internet connection
*I like the idea of packing everything and then just getting out what you need. Experienced that few times myself on my last 4 moves, everything I really needed for every day life fitted in my VW Polo.
*I don't know how much people carry in their cars, but everything I have fits in a glove box, like sunglasses, some tissues, a pen with some post-it notes, car's manual and small anti-bacterial soap.

When they started talking about smashing your TV, so you stop watching it or selling your house, that was a bit too far. I am up for minimalism if it means selling clutter that sits in the garage or everywhere around the house and getting rid of services that you don't really need or looking for ways to save on bills. Just get rid of all that, check where you can save money and only pay for what you really need is what would be minimalism for me.

Having a tidy house without needless clutter and being sensible with paid services don't make for minimalism, just sensible living.

The whole website can be summed up as "Make normal adult decisions which will help you be happier oh and hey, send us some of your money."

As for minimalism:

Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism's in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself.

I'd say that main point is that there's not a guide. Different people can simplify their lives in different ways. It's the message that stays the same.

There's a lot of negativity spawned from me simply sharing their site. There's a lot of free resources as a starting point on the website, and none of it demands money. The books are a separate entity that they're using the blog to advertise.

Please tell me Ferris Bueller is really an OCUK member. That would make my day.

Save Ferris!

Jism is bad?

The negativity is to do with the content of the site. It contains absolutely obvious suggestions to perhaps improve your life but served up as something far greater and more revelationary than it actually is.

Hanging around with the wrong people? Don't hang out with them anymore!

Have too much stuff you don't need? Get rid of it!

Running a bit low on money? Set up a minimalism website!

It's basic advice which most adults can work out by themselves without overstretching their cerebral functions too much. I'm not sure 'really obvious stuff' needs a new name.

Yes but people like to read stuff and act on it. Just because people already know it, doesn't mean that they necessarily act on it, so spelling it out for them helps.

I found, reading it, that I'd already done a load of the things they suggest.

I'm actually a massive believer in Maximalism. I like to have everything everywhere. Helps me keep positive Chi.

But I guess I know what I'm talking about.. unlike most of you.

After all, I am a black belt in Feng Shui.. so don't even think about messing with me.

This and I know that they give away most of their content for free but they charge for what is essentially basic advice everybody should all ready know.

The last thing I need to sort out is the wife and I've pretty much fulfilled their so called ism or philosophy.

She's changed over the last 5-10 years and doesn't fit my lifestyle any longer. There's plenty of totty around that I can simply go out with when the mood takes me. We have little in common any more, she fills my wardrobes with junk, can't cook for ****, uses my money for her own ends and looks like an all in wrestler now....yup, it's well overdue. Time to start digging the patio up me thinks...

If she's built like a wrestler, I would get her to help out digging the patio
