MinisForum MS-01 - Owners Thread

I have gotten a MS-01 and have been in the process of setting it up a few times now. The plan is to run proxmox on it and host opnsense with a WAS-110 with a cooling fan attached in one of the SFP+ ports to allow direct connection to my fiber WAN from AT&T. I am thinking of using the other SFP+ port to directly connect to a switch that has a SFP port on it. I also installed an LSI card in the PCIe slot so I can connect it to a EMC Disk array. I am planning to pass those into a NAS of some kind hosted in a lxc most likely. Will passthrough the GPU to a jellyfin server as well. Currently I have 3 2TB NVMe drives in the different slots. I am planning to use them to contain my VMs.

One thing I am unsure of. I don't need the WiFi in the case. Can I remove the M.2 2230 WiFi card and replace it with a smaller M.2 NVMe drive? Was thinking of something like 256-512GB for a "boot" disk on it.
Thoughts?
To my knowledge no however I believe Minisforum now have a 6x SSD expander card "thingy" which may be what you are looking for if you need more drives :)

Yeah, I got a 2230 ssd and the slot is keyed wrong on the MS-01. I learned a lot about M.2 key configs yesterday. I took out the Wifi which was keyed A/E and am putting in a SDCard to A/E converter. I will boot off the SD Card as I don't really care too much about OS Speed for ProxMox but will use the 3 2TB drives for hosting the VMs.

Update my end :/

Cancelled the 2x i5s. Ive now got 2x 1390 and a third on its way :)

I'm following the jims garage youtube channel to setup these with Ceph, i'm going to give it a go at the weekend.

I need to look at a new switch now for 10gb.

I use the TL-SX3008F (Fanless) and TL-SX30016F (Non-fanless) with my MS-01s. The 8 port one can be had for £200ish with the 16 port being £500ish and I'm happy to report they are rock solid units that run fairly cool.

Would highly recommend providing you stick to using DAC or fibre modules (They can handle 1 or 2 copper ports but I would avoid them purely due to how much power they pull) :)

Hi All,

Good news for those that ordered from MINIS direct.

They are shipping this week. :) They emailed me this morning and asked if i still wanted to cancel as shipping today.

So I just had a scare with my MS-01 cluster this evening.

As part of some routine maintenance to upgrade the firmware on the NAS which is used for storage I powered off all my hosts for around 30-40 minutes.

Came to power them back on and only two units came up, the 2nd one from the first batch I bought back in March wouldn't power on.

Cue panic as I thought I had just become the surprise new owner of a £400 paper weight as unplugging the power, mashing the button etc seemed to do nothing.

After leaving the unit powered off but unplugged for another 30ish minutes and taking it out of the case and re-connecting it the unit then powered on but it had lost all of its UEFI settings including the AMT password.

I've checked online and apparently the CMOS batteries included with these units "aren't the best" and so it seems to be a fairly common occurance that after the units have been powered off for a while they seem to struggle to come back on.

I'm going to power it off again this evening for 30+ minutes or so to see if it does it again or if it was a red herring, I've also logged a ticket with Minisforum but will update them tomorrow but yeah........ not the kind of surprise I appreciate, especially on a Wednesday evening!

Oh no, not good.

One of the units I got online from UK store had the bracket that is screwed into the fan/heatsink loose. So the fan was clanging about inside the case.

Can the CMOS battery be replaced easily ? I only as as returning the unit in probably going to be a headache. Unless they return to a UK repair centre and you get a repaired unit back?.

It's replaceable, not super easy to replace however after taking the front panel off it can be disconnected from the board with pliers.

I've given it a test again tonight by powering it off for just short of an hour and it came back up fine however I'm going to ask their support team if they're aware of anything that might cause it (UEFI draining it etc)

I think they do have a UK RMA center now but the unit would still have to go to China to be replaced so I'm trying to avoid that at all costs since it'll likely be late Jan before I get another back

I just realised, I never followed up with an update on how to get AMT working!

So, for the MS-01 if you are wanting to use AMT for KVM remotely you will need the following:
  • Meshcommander (Currently it appears to be unmaintained however the forks such as Mesh Mini don't appear to work and will give an authentication error or timeout)
  • HDMI dummy module
On the MS-01 do the following
  • Boot to UEFI and head to advanced settings
  • Make sure that "Primary Display" is set to IGFX
  • Go down to MEBX and select "Intel(R) ME Password
  • Enter "admin" as the password and then enter a new password with at least 1 capital, 1 symbol and 1 number
  • Make sure Intel(R) AMT is set to enabled
  • Select Intel (R) AMT Configuration
  • Make sure Password Policy is set to "Anytime" and Network Access State is set to "Network Active"
  • Enter "Redirection Features" and make sure everything is on
  • Exit and go to "User Consent" and make sure "User Opt-in" is set to "NONE" and "Opt-in Configurable from Remote IT2 is set to "Disabled"
  • Exit and go to "Network Setup" and enter "Intel(R) ME Network Name Settings"
  • The settings in here will depend on which NICs you are using on your MS-01, my personal preference is to use the SFP+ moudles and not use the RJ45 modules except for management so I have mine set to a dedicated IP and FQDN. If you want you can have it share the FQDN of the host OS
  • Exit and save settings
Make sure that you have the dummy module plugged into the HDMI port and Meshcommander set up then open Meshcommander and select "Add Computer" and configure as follows:
  • Friendly name: Whatever you want
  • Group name: Whatever you want
  • Host name: IP or FQDN of host
  • Auth/Security: Digest / TLS
  • Username: admin
  • Password: Whatever was set previously
When you first try to connect you will likely get some certificate promptws however you should be able to login, if you ever get any issues you may need to click the "Remove Realm" option to clear the Digest realm.

From within AMT you can use the remote desktop element (There will be a yellow/orange bar advising of the components that need to be enabled) along with serial over LAN.

You will need port 16993 open between your PC and the AMT on the MS-01 (Normally AMT uses 16992 but because this is SSL/TLS secured it uses 16993).

What I will say is that the AMT on the MS-01 has known security vulnerabilities (as most AMT implementations do) so if you are going to use this I would strongly advise segregating it to its own VLAN with rules to lock it down sufficiently. It's a great little tool but I wouldn't want it on my main LAN :)
