MinisForum MS-01 - Owners Thread

I'm using G-Tek 10Gbit SFP+ DACs with the X710 on mine. As far as I can tell in the MS-01 there is no vendor lock so any should work :)
Thanks.

This one by chance?

SFP+ DAC Twinax Cable 1.5-Meter(4.9ft), 10G SFP+ to SFP+ Direct Attach Copper Patch Passive Cable for Cisco SFP-H10GB-CU1.5M, Ubiquiti UniFi, TP-Link, Netgear, D-Link, Zyxel, Mikrotik and More https://amzn.eu/d/jcZ21dz

Thank you. I have resolved the crashes it seems and found that my switch manufacture now makes a 8 port switch with 4 sfp+ at 10 gb and 4 x rj45 10gb so I would like to try it and can then take the nic out and use x710 ports. I updated the firmware on those too as they were some revisions behind.

Hey,

I've just started looking at these.

What's the opinion on getting 2 of these for a proxmox cluster.

Is the newer AMD version with considering?

I'm planning on getting 2 and putting into a server rack.

Thanks

I run two in a Hyper-V cluster and it works great, I know Proxmox prefers you to have 3 nodes unless you are using a monitor device such as an RPI etc but if you have that it should be fine.

The AMD one I wouldn't bother with personally, it lacks the extra network connectivity and PCI-e slot meaning if you are wanting to wire up additional storage you are out of luck

I would stick with the ms01 i5 for the 10gb sfp and pci slot. I bought the bare bone version. Apart from re-applying the thermal paste and upgrading the x710 firmware it's been fine since...

Thanks guys,

I've got my finger on the button and I'm just finalizing spec.

I'm actually retiring at an AMD x1800 that's been on since release (think 2017) except for a couple of days when I moved home.

I had the same opinion on the AMD version, I have no idea why they thought that would be a good option.

I have ordered the rack mount that holds both the MS01 units. It's actually a 1.66U. it takes 4 weeks to arrive so ready for my Christmas build.

I have a couple of questions. I'm planning on just going 2x 48gb ram sticks (96GB) for each unit.

Does the i5 CPU support 96gb ram
Do I need to re-apply thermal paste

Am I going to regret getting the i5 CPU in the long run. Does the 13900H use more power, what's the pros cons. It's another £400 stepping up from i5 so that's another consideration.

I think I read somewhere it may support 96gb. Mine is only running 16gb.
I did reapply the paste. Upgraded the x710 firmware and disabled a fair few options in the bios. Apart from that it's golden lol... I need another i5. .

  • In theory the unit supports 96GB of RAM which has been tested with Corsair and Crucial modules from my understanding
  • Yes, I would definitely recommend replacing the thermal paste with something decent, the stock paste isn't great
The 13900H will use more power and the crucial element is it generates more heat, if you are running two of these units next to each other in a rack I think you will be better off with the i5 unit however even then you may want some sort of fan unit near them just to keep them fed with passive airflow.

For actual power to run work, the i5 should be fine unless you are doing something extreme :)

96gb will run at 4800 in the i5

Highly recommend dac cables from FS if you need them. I bought mine with the right code etc for each device. No problems at all.

Good to know!

I'm gonna do a post in the next few weeks on how to get the Intel AMT working for remote access as I think I have almost managed to get it working for KVM using a variety of guides online. It works for power management but I'm struggling to get it working for KVM as Meshmini keeps timing out (It could just be a Meshmini issue)

I've also tried Server 2025 on the unit this week and that runs with zero issues (Other than the issues that are related to Server 2025) :)

The other thing to be aware of is I got stung for customs and duty from FedEx even though minisforum say you shouldn't. I paid it and finally got it back from minisforum but took weeks to sort out so be aware of it. FedEx wouldn't release till I paid it.

Thanks guys,

I'm going i5, I'll do the repaste. I'll email minis first regards the import duty. I'll do that later as I'm unsure the wait on delivery.

A few final questions.

If I drop ram to 64gb will it run 5600
I'll have 1x NVME for proxmox OS (256gb or similar but high write capabilities )
1x NVME for VMs
1x 4TB SSD for storage

To link the Proxmox machines 1x dac cable, then 1x dac cable to link proxmox machine 1 to my switch.

Does the above make sense. Anything else I'm missing.

1 x X710 intel dac from fs.com is what I got

Im running 64GB 5600 here with no issues (Corsair DIMMs if it makes any difference) :)

When it comes th the M.2 and SSDs, just to confirm the unit supports 3x M.2 SSDs or 1x U.2 and 2x M.2 SSDs. It doesn't support any SATA drives to my knowledge so as long as the 4TB SSD is U.2 (And fits within the size constraints of the unit) you should be fine

I've not got much experience with Proxmox but you should be fine with the DAC to link the units and then using it to connect to your switch, if I recall correctly you may be able to use the Thunderbolt ports to link as well :)
