Mismatching tyres?

This is where my concern had come from. I've seen numerous reports of issues with mismatched tyres on E46's but none with E39's..

e39s are not driven as hard as e46s. I can't see how the e39 would be immune given the similarity of the chassis'.

Didn't read all the other comments, but if you're really anal about tyres like I am, I bet you'll buy odd tyres and within a few days regret your decision and want the same all around, been there myself.

What did your BMW come with from factory? Maybe look at getting the same, I'm guessing BMW design the car to work at it's full potential with the tyres it's sold with?

Have got Continental SC3's on my 172 and they seem to wear quite quickly.

Dunlop SP Sport 2000E's, 9 years ago. Tyre tech has moved on somewhat since then :p

What's the current Dunlop tyre for your car? Maybe take a look at them?

I'd bet you a lot of money, if you got odd tyres on each axle, within a few days you'll feel so OCD about it, you'll have to by the same for both axles.. :p

I had the first Continental sport contacts for my clio, needed the fronts changing, got some Yokohama's for the front, had the older Continentals on the back, and within days the Yoko's were sold and fitted with the newer SC3.. Even now I'm OCD because I've got 2 different phases of SC's on front and back.... :p

depends on the tires fox.

When i bought my car it had ultrac sessantas on the back an pirrelli pzero rossos on the front. it was fine.

i swapped the ultracs for f1 assymetrics, and it was like driving on ice. REALLY bad. I've concluded it MUST have been the mismatch.

I had CS5s on the back and CS3s on the front and it was again great, not a problem.

With that ltd experience, id be happy to mismatch cs3 and 5, but not f1 and cs3.

Tom.

I reckon the decision depends upon the wear rate difference of the fronts and rears. i.e. How long will you have to wait until the fronts will be down to 3mm based on past experience and the current tread depth?

If it's a while, I'd get the CS3's and wait for the next tyre change to "upgrade" the entire set. If it's not a while, then get the best tyres you can for the rears at the minute and upgrade the fronts to the same when they need changing. That way the amount of time you will have mismatched tyres will be minimised.

The fact is, it can only be as good having different tyres on the front and rears as it can be having a matching set. Most of the time, it will probably be worse.

EDIT: Just seen your last post. In that case, get a matching set, so either all CS3's or replace all the tyres and sell your fronts as part worns.

Buy the better tyres. Mixing good premium tyres at the front with slightly better premium tyres at the back will be a complete non issue.

If you had super hard plastic ditch finders at one end and R888's at the other it might be a different story :p

Option D - save up a bit more and get 4 x Eagle F1A2's to satisfy the OCD.

That's what i did, except not with F1A2's

Or

Option E - rotate the tyres, swap fronts with backs and wear them out until they are all 3mm then replace them! :p

Get SC3s for the rear. The car looks much better with matched types. The Asymmetric 2 isn't that much better IMO to warrant odd types. The SC5 will have a massive lead time Conti can't produce enough tyres at the moment due to lack of capacity at the factories, they just lost a €200m contract with an OEM due to not keeping up supplies.

They don't even list it yet as an SC5 size :(

They haven't had stock of my size since Xmas in SC3. The prices wholesalers have on their stock has gone up about 45 a tyre since then. SC5 was announced in my size in Feb and has never appeared.

My rears are wider. This is why I can get a CS5 for front but not back.

Yeah I wondered if that might be the case as I thought you would have done it.

:o

What are they playing at? Imagine if you got a puncture.

So you think the E39 5 series has a similar chassis (actually floor pan as it's a monocoque construction) to the E46 3 series? Given the difference in track and wheelbase this seems very unlikely to me.

I've got the same issue.

The fronts need changing, but the rears are fine.
It's got Pilot Sports all round and they don't even exist anymore :p

I suspect I'll just stick some CS3s on the front and get on with my life.
