Missing IP

LOL... I just spotted where you are. Hello neighbour. I know a decent IT Engineer who operates in your area who could take the headache away... :p

This "DHCP Client Starting" bit. Is that on the PC or the router. Your posts are getting confusing. This points to other problems if that ain't working correctly in XP. How are your service packs? Windoze updates? Is your anti-virus software up to date? Clear of spyware? Is the PC itself healthy? (I assume it was working when OCUK finished setting it up, so what have you added since? Any pron surfing? File sharing? and other such nasty infectious stuff?)

If you have fixed the IP address, and are using an Ethernet cable, then it should be simple. Have you tried the Network Sticky on this forum?

Can you ping your router? You should be starting at this level really. Attach the Ethernet cable, fix the IP Address, and ping the router. (type "cmd" in the run... prompt. Then type "ping 192.168.0.1" (Or whatever your router's IP address is... you have not told us))

'ang on... I just gone back to your first post. In that you say it is all working, but the icon keeps hunting. Now I am very confused.... Are we talking an NTL connection here? If so, then when you add a router instead of connecting directly, you will need to reboot your NTL modem or Set Top Box and the go to http://register.autoregister.net)

Note: "routing and remote networking" service should be disabled.

TBH - the information you have provided is too confusing. Can you do a straight, calm update of what you are attempting to do, and what you PC is setup as so far. (i.e. NTL or ADSL, Router MODEL (not just the speed), What works, what doesn't work, Wireless or Ethernet?) I still don't quite understand how you are connected to the net to write this post...

Try looking at the client access list in the router admin and see if the MAC address of your wireless card is allowed access.

Little off topic Q: This is the 2nd fault I seem to have got with this new comp, not to mention the 10min startup. Do OcUK do refunds? the last repair they did took 4weeks and now with this new problem, i'm under pressure to get it done. Trying to stop my dad going to the trading standards office :S. (sorry about the mini rant but It had to be done :p )
I don't work for OcUK, yada yada, but I thought I'd pick up on this point as I don't think anyone else has.

An IP address is nothing something a computer should intrinsically 'have' - that's like saying "my car doesn't have any CDs for the in-car CD player - give me a refund" :)

You just haven't got it setup correctly. I'd bet the Windows firewall or an incorrect wireless key. I'd disable all that, set an IP manually, and try and access the router. Or try the Windows networking wizard...it actually works (some of the time) :)

lol please do, Nothing i love better then coming home from work to spend 6 hours going back and forth from laptop to desktop trying to get connected :( I am close to looking in the Yellow pages/friday add for a mech.

Sorry for the confusion, but i have other threads across the net on this..you guys have made best progres but I do loose track of what i told who. @_@
As from what i've done,
  • Optaining IP and DNS automaticly doesnt work.
  • Given it an IP and DNS to use isnt working (last nights attempt still in the works)
  • Router cant pick up signal from the Pc but computer says it has.
  • DHCP Client is on Automatic but the status is stuck on Starting.
  • Router has been reinstalled, all drivers are up to date and working perfect for the other machines in my network.
I'm not sure where to problem is at the moment; Is it the router refusing my new Pc? or is the new Pc scrambled and unable to send to the router? (Brother did suggest reseting Pc to factory settings incase Oc did something silly ;) )

The computers setup maybe wrong, I didnt set up anything when i got this computer. Dont know if windows it is up to date or not. The windows firewall is down and it wont let me put it up anyway which is driving my Macfee nuts. As soon as i activated windows, i installed my important stuff like music, pictures and files then firewall. Then i tried internet and i came to this problem, thinking it was all tested and ready to go why shouldnt i have alittle whine? :D

Have you tried to reset the router to it's factory defaults using the small button on the back ?

Sleek - email in my trust. We can go into more details. :)

Don't reset the PC to factory settings - that is overkill (and a waste of OCUK's time and effort). This should be simple, so something weird is stopping this. It may even be a combination of confused suggestions from various sources.

Okay, an email should get to ya soon MAllen, cheers.

If there is a proper system malfuntion somewhere, i'll let you guys know for future reference..if it is actually a 30min config job, i think i'll let the thread fade away ;)
Thanks for all your help.
