So on your normal wage you can't afford the finance - you are having to rely on an extra days work to cover it? Sounds like you are overstretching yourself to me, and that's before something major goes wrong with it.

i only work 3 days a week, i can easily do 4 and sometimes i only do 2 ........... i usually do weekends only with an extra day thrown in.

Why not work more days if you can and just save up, whilst waiting it'll make you decide if you really want one or not and then your not taking any extra finance on?

I've just read the link to S2KI. The guy was saying they were no better than KYB, GAZ, Koni etc.
The standard suspension on an evo 5 is made by KYB.

As for the steering wheel and gear knob. The steering wheel on an evo 4, 5 or 6 (and 7 & 8 RS) is enormous. I quite like it but lots don't. The gear knob is made of leather and they really don't last long if you've got sweaty palms or lots of rings.

That comment was obviously not aimed at people like you and clearly aimed at specifically this thread...I mean you just have to read it.

Apologies, didn't mean to rant heh :D was more the term dreamers :p I know of a few people who have financed themselves to death but have 'dream' cars as a result :p

I mentioned it before and I think someone else did. Why does it not have the OE steering wheel?

As Des says.

what tell tale signs, dont forget this car was described as excellent by someone who knows.

Apart from the screaming obvious such as EML, AYC light etc, from the top of my head:

  • Check inside the boot under the carpet, it should not be painted. If it is, it's most likely had a rear ender.
  • Check the AYC fluid.
  • Ignition on, steering lock off, engine off, keep pressing the accelerator while turning the wheel left and right, you should hear the AYC pump kick in. If not, regardless of what the bulb might indicate, the AYC needs a solenoid at least replacing. £600+.
  • Check all panel gaps, lines along the shoulders, door gaps, bonnet gaps. Everything. Then check again. More Evo's have been crashed and put back on the road than people realise.
  • 30mph in 5th/6th (depending on gearbox) and floor it, it should not slip. If it does, clutch/flywwheel. £800.
  • If the belts have been done, make sure the balance shaft belt has been changed as well.
  • Get it up in the air and check thoroughly, especially if the car has been near a seaside town. There are posts on MLR that show you what to look for. I'd be very weary if it's coated in fresh underseal. Check the garage that did the job and ask what it was like before. Whether they lie or not is another matter...
  • Get it inspected by a reputable garage that know about Evo's.

There's loads more, most can be found searching the MLR. Evo's can be a ticking time bomb with a lot of hidden past, do your research, don't panic buy and you should be fine.

the coilovers are going to be tricky, i've not read a good review yet on any of them, except the Ohlins........Bilstein are too expensive.

I put Bilstein B14's on my Evo IX. They lasted about 4 weeks till I put the standard stuff back on with Eibach lowering springs. Far too harsh/crashy.

i've sent the seller an email about that Pump, this should be interesting;)

he's an Evo nut if he cant answer this to my satisfaction it's over

You put harder suspension on the car and the rides quality gets worse, no ****...
it's bound to be on rubbish roads, the roads in the New Forest are pot holed to hell and back again

maybe he's put the right Coilovers on!! average and semi soft... not sure

I've got a 3 hour train journey tomorrow to go collect my new car (unfortunately it's not an Evo :( ) - hopefully this thread continues to deliver throughout the trip.

It may have just had paint for other reasons which don't mean accident. Get it inspected. It's just that some garages don't realise it's not painted so they paint it fully.
