Mixing IDE and SATA in RAID1?

Is it possible to mix IDE and SATA HDDs in a RAID 1 configuration? The reason I am asking is I am designing a server based on some old hardware I have, and I have 1 x 500GB IDE disk and 1 x 500GB SATA disk.

I was wondering if, other than speed-wise (I'm not worried about performance, more just to make sure it works), would there be a problem using these in a RAID1 setup? It would just be setup using software RAID in the OS itself.

Thanks!

I'm not aware of any RAID implementations which operate across a SATA and an IDE controller - I've seen all IDE and all SATA but not mixed.

You could, however, go for an IDE to SATA convertor which will let you use both disks on a SATA RAID controller.

Well that's the thing, I'm not using a hardware RAID controller, so I thought perhaps the OS could manage with multiple connection types.

Awesome news, thank you ubersonic! Yeah the server is just going to get used at home for file storage so we don't need to leave computers on with shares. Thanks very much!
