Ok as some of you know im after a Mk1 Toyota MR2.
My question is, What model should i go try and get? I can get the Supercharged version down here aswell as the others.

Please help me know what model to look for.

Any other infomation will be helpfull to :)

Ps.I have the 3 MR2 forums so i dont need those to be posted.

Thanks :)

Well do you like to have a revvy engine? If so, and you are going to modify it, don't go for the supercharged one. If not, then definitly go for the supercharged version.

Also then you have the choice of hardtop, hardtop with sunroof or t-bar. I would say for where you are t-bar would be a lovely thing to have due to the weather. The chassis isn't quite as stiff but it's not that bad at all.

I seem to remember in 1989 there was one called the 'special edition' which was loads with lots of toys like electric folding mirrors and A/C. Though you can get A/C on other models as it was an option.

What model gets to 0-62 the quickest?
Most medels down here should have Air con down here because of the climate
There could be modifying plans down the line aswell but that all depends

The supercharged one is the fastest stock. Has a lot more torque the the N/A model aswell. Just can't mod it to crazy high revs, thats all. :)

Probably the cheapest way to get more power from the mk1 MR2 is to fit the turbo mk2 engine, the 3S-GTE. Mk1's with those engines are dubbed mk1.5.

How much does it cost to get an engine conversion?
Excluding the engine price because your price for that will be slighjtly different down her.

So basically the labour cost for it.
Do you get what i mean? :o

All depends what engine it is. I am not sure how much it is really though, never looked into that at all. Not sure what insurance will be like you having a car that does 0-60 close to 5 seconds though.

If i did do it, it would be a bit down the track. So i should have a NCB by then with Australian insurance :D

The 3SGTE swap is quite involved and there aren't that many cars out there that have had it done. Even if you can find anywhere that is prepared to take it on and do the swap for you then it'll cost you big bucks and probably won't be worth it, however if you plan on doing it yourself as a project then it'll still be well worth considering.

A simpler swap would be fitting a 20v 4-AGE. It's not a common swap over here as the engine isn't available unless imported however if they were sold in Aus then it'll be well worth considering (Familiarise yourself with the Corrolla range as that's what they were fitted to in Japan)

Oh and have a read of this:

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=39180

There's a couple of useful links relating to 20v swaps in that thread.

An engine swap wont mess with the handeling at all will it?
It will still handel almost the same it did before wont it?

Pros and cons are welcome :)

a 3sgte will add some weight which and will shift the weight distribution a bit further back. I doubt it'd significantly affect the handling though.

a 20v would make no difference at all.

This is practically a classic car. Personally I think it would be madness to to start modding it. Its a sweet car as is. If you want a faster more powerful car just buy the Mrk2 Turbo and mod that instead. You can get massive power out of modding that. My mate ran a mrk1 T-Bar for many years and I thought it was a great little car. Sweet handling etc. But its not all that fast. About the same as my MrII CRX. I tried a few SC models and while they were quicker, I'd prefer the T-bar for the fun of the open roof.

The question is why are you buying it?

They arnt extremely common and insurance doesn't rape me.
Plus they are supposed to be extremely fun little cars with very good handling
Its a cheap fun car really :)

First of all the Mk1 handles better then the mk2 does. I personally prefer the looks of the mk1 aswell to the mk2.

No, a supercharged mid engined sports car is NOT a 'good first car'.

England no, Australia yes :)
You must learn the different cars our 2 nations have when it comes to first cars :)

It probably wont end up being a Supercharged version anyway. They are around but very hard to come buy one for sale

Location is irrelevant, where you live has nothing whatsoever to do with the blatant unsuitable of something like an MR2 as a first car.

Doesnt matter what country it is, you can still lose it and find you are going the wrong way into a hedge.
