Mk1 MR2 advice needed

Location is irrelevant, where you live has nothing whatsoever to do with the blatant unsuitable of something like an MR2 as a first car.

Attitudes towards driving in general vary from country to country. Young people in different countries are more/less likely to drive like pillocks.

Road types and traffic densities also vary by country. Here we have quite a high proportion of twisty narrow roads where inexperienced drivers are more likely to get in trouble with a high powered car.

Then of course there's the weather. I'm assuming that most of Zips driving would be done in good conditions. I can't comment on an SC as i've not driven one but an n/a mk1 hasn't really got enough power for you to get the back out in the dry unless you are trying to.

Doesnt matter what country it is, you can still lose it and find you are going the wrong way into a hedge.

I know.
But in context we are brought up around with cars that have **** loads more power then 1 litre corsas.
Its also a matter of driving to your ability and not going over the limits :)

And ive been driving my mum car around for bloody ages now so its more like a first car that i own personally

All i will say is before buying it, go for a skid pan training session in a rwd car. This should make you safer to a certain extent.

It was always on the plans :)
If i do that i get cheaper insurance premiums aswell :D
Im also thinking about going for my rally licence at some stage :)

My mk2 turbo is more rear-end stable and more forgiving than my 122bhp mk1, especially in the wet. It has got better tyres on though. Lift off oversteer in the mk1 is not to be under-estimated.

Nice car though, good luck with it, but be careful.

Don't bother swapping the engine to the 20v. It's not worth the hassle. :)

So if i do get one and decide to swap i might aswell go for the bigger engine?
Wouldnt mind a project car TBH :)

Surprised at that, mine hasn't exactly got amazing tyres on it and in the dry it's fairly stable except when doing silly stuff, never driven a mk2 though...

In the dry though it's very easy to get the rear end out, but very controllable as well...

IMO the 20v is worth it, as long as you go the full hog and get a programmable ecu for it, from what i've read just a decent mapping will raise the engine to 185 ish ps, which is a considerable amount more than the standard 16v.

Although if you've got a good 16v then the cost of the 20v might be better spent on tuning the 16v if you were going to stick to a 4a-ge, the 16v's tune really quite well (if not stupidly cheaply like turbo's)

You can get SCs with a T bar...

Never seen one. All SC I've seen are Japanese imports with AC and no T-Bar.

Any of the Mrk1 ones I've driven were tricky at the rear, bad/lazy technique or inattention and the back came out.

I don't see the point of putting a bigger engine in one. Just buy a Mrk2 Turbo with 220bhp at stock. They are easily modified. The Mrk2 is also a great handling car.

The Mk2 also costs more to begin with ;)
